Meet LEGO® Cataclaws – Our Festive Feline Friend

If you’ve joined us for our festive celebrations over the last couple of years, you might have spotted a certain cool cat leaving playful pawprints everywhere.

A cool cat by the name… of Cataclaws.

Cataclaws is quite simply a catalyst for play. That’s right, CATalyst. (And yes, this article will be full of cat puns. And no, we will not be apologizing for this.)

Are you curious to learn more? Good! Because when did curiosity ever hurt anyone or any cat…

    Where did Cataclaws come from?

There are a few wild theories that are going around the internet, ranging from Cataclaws being born on Jupiter, to being an undercover jazz musician (AKA a ‘mewsician’), to the outlandish idea that she was created by a team of LEGO® employees.

In reality, as we all know, she was created by a group of kids who go by the name of The Play Squad. On one of the most boring days imaginable, back in 2023, these brainy kids combined their creative forces to use the Superpower of Play and built Cataclaws out of LEGO bricks.

Cataclaws thus went on to make her on-screen debut for our Play Is Your Superpower campaign. Whiskers McFee, the film critic for Cat Weekly, praised her “clawsome cattitude” and called her a “natural purrformer”.

In our 2024 holiday campaign, you might notice Cataclaws is a touch more animated and lively than in her previous role. The internet theorists are united on why this is the case and we can confirm she had life breathed into her by The Play Squad, who used… *checks notes* … real actual magic.

    What is Cataclaws’ mission?

As shown throughout our 2024 holiday celebrations, Cataclaws pops up wherever and whenever there’s a situation that could use even a whisker of play.

She throws up furballs in the face of boredom, reminding us all what the holiday season is all about – and perhaps more importantly, what it is NOT about (we’re looking at you, stress.)

    What makes Cataclaws purr?

Like most cats, Cataclaws is very into her martial arts. Did you know, for example, that she would technically be a black belt in karate... if only she had opposable thumbs to tie the belt?

Although she now lives in Billund, Denmark, on any available windowsill inside the LEGO headquarters, she is on record as saying that her dream holiday destination is Aoshima in Japan (Google it...)

    Can I build Cataclaws?

If you have a pocket full of bricks and a head full of creativity, yes you can!

We even have a couple of ways you can kickstart your journey towards creating Cataclaws.

First up, we’ve created a LEGO Families activity featuring the magnificent feline. It consists of a fetching, printable portrait that is perfect for kids to color in and be inspired by.

We also have instructions on how to build a mini-Cataclaws and even one on how to build the iconic Cataclaws beanie – from scratch!

From. Scratch. (Look, that’s the best cat pun in the article, so if you didn’t like it, then it’s downhill from here...)

    What will the future hold?

There are rumors that Cataclaws will soon be showing off abilities not yet dreamed of, that might see her gain even more than the 9 lives you already expect…

But one thing for certain is that Cataclaws is going nowhere. We love having her here, you love having her here, and she… well, she’s still a cat, so we’re never sure what’s going on inside her head.

We HAD hoped to get the latest gossip straight from the feline’s mouth by emailing Cataclaws’ representatives to find time for an interview for this article, but they said that Cataclaws was unavailable for comment because “the cat had got her tongue”.

We then asked them exactly which cat it was that had her tongue, because if it was Cataclaws herself then it wouldn’t necessarily stop her from being able to give an interview.

We’re still waiting for a reply.

Anyway… We hope you had a lovely festive period with Cataclaws and are looking forward to many more a-meow-zing ones together in the future. (Okay, fine, we apologize for that one.)
