Origins

Back in 2005, we set sail into the world of Norse mythology with the LEGO® Vikings theme. 7 unique and exciting sets were born, and have solidified their place in LEGO history…

The Vikings were seafaring Norse warriors who emerged from Scandinavia during the early medieval period, around the 8th to 11th centuries. The name "Viking" itself comes from the Old Norse word for "pirate raid," which reflects their reputation for exploring, raiding and trading across vast distances. These voyages took them to diverse regions, including the British Isles, the North Atlantic and as far east as the Mediterranean and Near East.

LEGO fans could immerse themselves in history and mythology with these awesome Viking sets. They brought fierce Viking warriors, horned helmets and all, into battle against legendary beasts like the Midgard Serpent and the Fenris Wolf. Designers took inspiration from real Viking Age ring fortresses in Denmark, adding historical depth to the fantasy.

Originally planned to end in 2006, the theme’s popularity kept it going until 2007.

Step into the world of LEGO® Vikings

Though only seven LEGO® Vikings sets were released, their epic names (like Viking Fortress against the Fafnir Dragon!) and unique minifigures with new weapons, armor and expressions made a lasting impact on the LEGO fan community. Let’s take a look at the Viking Warrior Challenges the Fenris Wolf (7015) set, an action-packed LEGO set that brought the epic clash from Norse mythology to life. The set featured a Viking warrior equipped with a sword, a battleaxe and an armor plate, ready to face the fearsome Fenris Wolf, a striking black creature. In Norse mythology, Fenris is one of the most dangerous and cunning foes one could encounter, presenting a challenge even to the strongest of warriors.
The LEGO Vikings theme portrayed a lot of creatures from Norse mythology, for example The Midgard Serpent, also known as Jörmungandr (Loki's son) with a movable head, tail, body, jaw and fins. Other honorable mentions include the Nidhogg Dragon and the Wyvern Dragon, which fans could tackle with one of the many Viking warrior minifigures, complete with their iconic horned helmets and various different outfits. The Viking King also appeared as a major character in two of our Viking sets, wearing his signature red cape in the Viking Fortress against the Fafnir Dragon (7019) set, and a black cape in the Viking Ship Challenges the Midgard Serpent (7018) set.
Alongside these fearsome creatures and brave warriors, we created some pretty awesome Viking settings as a backdrop for the action too. In the Viking Boat against the Wyvern Dragon (7016) set, the minifigures could attack the dragon from inside a detailed Viking longboat, complete with a dragon head ornament, shields and oars. The Army of Vikings with Heavy Artillery (7020) set allowed the minifigures to operate a massive artillery wagon equipped with a working launcher, ten fiery projectiles and a hidden treasure chest. Our LEGO designers even created a hyper-realistic Viking fortress with towering walls, a rotating ballista, a functional catapult, a working drawbridge and a secret escape tunnel, as seen in the Viking Fortress Against the Fafnir Dragon (7019) set.
