Tips for building with LEGO® Technic elements

LEGO® TECHNIC™ sets use a different building system than classic LEGO sets. They’re designed for builders who want to create advanced models with complex features like motors, transmissions and differentials. With the addition of our Powered Up platform, you’ll be able to add sound and light using remote-controlled sensors to bring your build to life. Here’s how to make the most of your TECHNIC building journey.  

Getting the pieces right 

With all the different beams and axles you’ll find in your TECHNIC set accuracy is key. If a piece is pictured with '1:1' next to it you can check you've got the right piece by placing it next to the 1:1 drawing of the piece. Every beam and axle comes with a number telling you the length in studs. Use another LEGO piece to measure by counting how many studs it spans.

We’ve created a chart for measuring Technic pieces. Download the Technic Measurement Chart and print it out at 100% scale to keep as a reference.  

Building tips 

Some Technic pieces need a little space so they can move or turn, so be careful not to push your gears and axles too tightly.   Sometimes there are extra pieces leftover throughout your build. We include extra pieces in LEGO Technic sets because they can be built in more than one way.
