R2-D2 and C-3PO: A Dynamic Duo on Display

The most famous droids in the galaxy join forces to form the ultimate ‘must-have’ shelf pairing for any LEGO® Star Wars™ fan…

C-3PO and R2-D2 have been our guides to the Star Wars galaxy from its beginning, escaping the Tantive IV with the stolen Death Star plans in A New Hope™, negotiating the dangers of the Clone Wars and helping new heroes in the battle against the First Order. These iconic characters are the only ones to appear in all nine Skywalker Saga movies.

The 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars was therefore the perfect opportunity to reunite this beloved pair in LEGO form with two new sets.

Is There Anything I Can Do?

Programmed for etiquette and protocol, C-3PO is a talkative droid always prepared to help, although he has a tendency to worry. Perhaps this is understandable, given his dangerous lot in life!

Despite this, Threepio’s famously shiny plating has generally remained intact and required an extraordinary 34 elements manufactured in gold for the first time. 475 pearl gold pieces are used in total, the most of any LEGO Star Wars set, so this droid stands out on any shelf.

C-3PO’s storied history is apparent from his silver lower leg, as seen throughout the Original Trilogy. The figure recreates this important feature with drum-lacquered silver and grey parts, capturing the protocol droid’s classic features faithfully.

As well as elements in new colors, the figure introduces some newly molded parts. A new Technic™ connector links the two halves of Threepio’s body, recreating his always-perfect posture, while LEGO designer Jackson Hughes can tell us about the other unique pieces:

“We always strive to use existing LEGO elements when we design new models. Still, after about ten iterations, we decided to develop two new elements to get the characteristic head shape just right.”

    A Well-Put-Together Little Droid

C-3PO’s trusty counterpart, R2-D2, is also extremely popular and has been designed with the same attention to detail. An array of curved slopes form R2-D2’s cylindrical body, while his domed head is sculpted with layers of plates and tiles, ensuring the shape looks superb from any direction.

Even as adorable as R2-D2 is, he can’t get by on looks alone. Fortunately, this model is fully equipped with tools for any circumstance, including an attachable periscope, a computer interface arm and another for holding items, plus his removable third leg to traverse terrain at speed.

All these details are inspired by scenes in the Star Wars movies, whether they’re emerging from a swamp on Dagobah, accidentally linking to power sockets on Cloud City or catching a communicator aboard General Grievous’s flagship during the Clone Wars.

It seems the only thing R2-D2 cannot do is speak in anything other than bleeps, which is why we need C-3PO to translate!

    The Ultimate Pairing

C-3PO and R2-D2 are impressive alone, but we only need to remember what happens when they separate in A New Hope to realize they are always better together!

These two droids have thus been constructed at the same scale, so you can easily pose them together. For example, you can stage C-3PO fondly patting, just as he does in the movies, or you can raise his arm to wave at a distant Sandcrawler, perhaps with Artoo trundling away to hide from approaching Jawas!

    C-3PO (75398) stands tall at 15” (38cm), while R2-D2 (75379) is correctly scaled at 9” (24cm). Together, they’re a force to be reckoned with!

    Made to Display

C-3PO may be programmed for protocol, but these two droids are definitely made to display! LEGO designers thus added a few special touches to enhance their appearance.

R2-D2 comes complete with a brick-built information plaque, plus a mini version of R2-D2 and an exclusive 25th anniversary Darth Malak minifigure. C-3PO is also packaged with a matching plaque and stands atop a sandy base, recreating the desert of Tatooine.

Thanks to their different appearances, the droids offer totally unique building experiences and are ideal to assemble as a pair.

C-3PO would likely be pleased to make his LEGO debut at this scale. He even contains 1138 pieces – a special number in the Star Wars universe, featured in several of the films as a tribute to the debut of THX-1138™.

Present for almost every iconic moment in the Star Wars galaxy, these droids are perfect additions to any LEGO Star Wars collection, while the Astromech droid Chopper (C1-10P) set (75416) will take your droid collection even further.
