Sustainable packaging

LEGO® bricks are designed to be used and handed down through generations, but LEGO boxes and other packaging are often disposed of quickly. Some of our packaging contains single-use disposable plastic which isn’t recyclable in many parts of the world. It’s one reason why we don’t consider it sustainable, and why we’re aiming to make all our packaging more sustainable by the end of 2025.

Purpose of packaging

Our packaging is designed to provide the best experience when unpacking LEGO® sets. For example, bags in LEGO boxes have numbers printed on them relating to the steps in our Building Instructions, which supports the building process.

But even before a LEGO set reaches the hands of a builder, the packaging is doing its job, for example by providing information and inspiration, and by protecting the LEGO set inside. We don’t want any bricks to go missing.

Packaging materials

It’s our aim that by the end of 2025, all our packaging will be made from sustainably sourced materials that are either renewable, or made from recycled content and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®C117818).

We promote recycling and provide guidance on how to responsibly recycle LEGO packaging.

LEGO® boxes

Our LEGO boxes are made from cardboard with 75% of all cardboard used coming from recycled materials, and can be recycled where infrastructure and access to paper and carboard recycling exist.

Bags in LEGO boxes

We are in the process of switching from single-use plastic bags to paper-based bags in our LEGO boxes. These bags are used to package loose bricks and assist the building process, for example through symbols and printed numbers. Over the next 3 years, single-use plastic bags will be phased out gradually, which means you might find a mix of plastic and paper-based bags in our boxes. Our paper-based bags can be recycled in many of our markets.

LEGO baseplate packaging

Our baseplates are now wrapped in paper-based packaging instead of single-use plastic wrappers. Our paper-based baseplate packaging can be recycled in many of our markets.
