How to Use LEGO® Science Kits for Educational Play

Educational Play in Action: How STEM Kits Shape Essential Skills

Education through play is a staple of childhood development, allowing children to learn at their own pace in a way that keeps them engaged. Studies have established 16 different types of play for kids, and all can be educational in their own way. Often, a child’s most profound or valuable moments of learning come during play; hands-on activities give them more opportunities for experimentation, exploration and learning through trial and error than simply watching, listening or reading.

One increasingly popular method of encouraging educational play is through the use of STEM kits – hands-on activity sets designed to develop skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These kits promote learning by developing tactile, play-based activities framed around core educational concepts.

STEM kits are available for a wide range of ages, with contents tailored towards each age group or skill level. Younger children can interact with hands-on activities focused on fine motor skills, shape sorting and counting, while older children and teenagers can develop more advanced skills related to coding, engineering and robotics – learning new ideas that can even be useful for pursuing career pathways.

Key strategies for educational science play

Having established that learning through play can be a valuable tool for childhood development, it’s important to find effective ways of getting children to engage and soak up as much knowledge as possible. Here are a few ideas that can help your child develop a love of learning through educational science play:

  1. Encourage independence and curiosity
Provide your child with the space to explore on their own, learning through trial and error. Encouraging them to experiment, test their own theories and make mistakes is vital for building their confidence and curiosity; if you can instill a genuine interest in learning for its own sake, your child will be well placed to take on new ideas.
  2. Encourage critical thinking and prediction
One great way to engage your child in educational play is to ask open-ended questions that encourage them to think more deeply about what they’re doing – not just what’s happening, but why it’s happening, predicting what might happen next and considering how they can affect the outcome.
  3. Make it interactive and hands-on
Children are generally more drawn to physical activities, and the ability to interact with objects in front of them can be great for learning. Building activities allow them to consider how their decisions have knock-on effects and test solutions to problems, while developing essential concentration and fine motor skills.
  4. Integrate with daily life
If your child can recognize the real-world uses of STEM skills, rather than viewing them as abstract concepts, they will find it much easier to engage with them and retain information. Whether developing simple maths skills by adding up the item costs at the supermarket or learning how to perform basic DIY at home, there are plenty of opportunities to introduce STEM skills into everyday life.
  5. Promote out-of-the-box thinking and problem solving
Children can learn and retain facts by rote, but the key to developing strong problem-solving skills is by thinking creatively. Experimenting with new approaches and thought processes, rather than focusing on establishing the most efficient method, is an excellent way to develop more agile, imaginative thinking skills.
  6. Try structured learning aids
As we’ve established, STEM skills can be acquired in all areas of life – but there are also plenty of structured STEM toys that are specially designed to support physical and cognitive development in a way that feels natural, rewarding and fun. Our range of LEGO® STEM sets are purpose-built to develop specific STEM skills, and caters to children of all ages.
