Why the new LEGO® Back to the Future set is even more incredible than ones from the past

In 1985, Californian teenager Marty McFly met scientist Emmet “Doc” Brown for the first time, and one of the all-time great movie friendships was born. But equally as famous as the dynamic duo was the car that sped them off on their adventures through time.

It’s an instantly recognizable and iconic car that’s amazingly brought to life in the new LEGO® Back to the Future Time Machine set.
This set is like a time machine itself. Just one look at it and you’ll travel back in time to the moment when you saw the iconic movie for the first time, met Marty, Doc, George and Biff and went on one of the greatest journeys in film history.

Even if you’re not a Back to the Future mega fan, you’ve got to admit it’s still a really cool car.

In fact, the Doc said it pretty well himself: “If you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?”

Well said, Doc.

Where we’re going we don’t need roads

The three different ways one LEGO® set can be built.

The 3-in-1 LEGO® Back to the Future Time Machine set gives you multiple ways to build, each one representing a different movie from the trilogy.

First, there’s the original, complete with the lightning conductor Marty and Doc used to get back to 1985. Then there’s the flying car from Back to the Future Part II, complete with fold-down tires for flight mode. Finally, there’s the version from Back to the Future Part III, with the tray filled with electronic parts from 1955 that takes Marty all the way to back the old Wild West.

Each one includes classic gullwing doors, travel dates printed on the dashboard, interchangeable license plates (including the iconic OUTATIME plate) and, of course, you can’t travel through time without a flux capacitor, which in this set even lights up.

Interestingly, in early drafts of the Back to the Future script the time travel device used by Marty and Doc was actually a fridge!

Perhaps, if it hadn’t been re-written, we would be releasing a Time Travel Fridge set. We’ll have to go back in time to find out.

The set also includes two new designs of minifigures Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Marty even comes with the iconic pink hoverboard featured in Back to the Future Part II.

It’s funny to think that the futuristic second film takes place on 22nd October 2015. Now, we’re past that date, but are still waiting for our hoverboards!

We’ll just have to make do with the one included in this set.

I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet

Now, the Back to the Future mega fans out there will know that this isn’t the first time we’ve released a set based on the fan favorite trilogy. In fact, this will be the third.

Back in 2014, we released the much smaller LEGO® Ideas Back to the Future Time Machine set (21103). Then, a few years later, there was the 2016 LEGO Dimensions Level Pack – Back to the Future Marty Time Machine (71201).

But we don’t think that you can have too much of a good thing, and so we’re back with our biggest and most detailed set yet. The new LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set is on a similar scale to some of our other recent car builds.

There’s something amazing about movies like Back to the Future. Just the thought of them can inspire such wonderful, nostalgic feelings. And we think the Back to the Future Time Machine set is going to do the same for fans around the world.

In some ways, it’s a shame that we can’t go back in time – then we could go back and see the movies for the first time again. But we think the future will be pretty great too, and with this set it will be even better.

In the words of Doc Brown: “Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one.”
