    About LEGO® DUPLO®

The LEGO Group started research into making a larger brick for younger builders in the 1950s, and the DUPLO® brick was launched in 1969. The name ‘DUPLO’ comes from the Latin word ‘duplus,’ meaning ‘double.’ The name was chosen because DUPLO bricks are double the size of LEGO® bricks!

DUPLO figures first appeared in 1977. We’ve also made lots of DUPLO animals, accessories, and more. The first DUPLO train came out in 1983, with the first electric train launching in 1993.

It was important for us to make sure that the new DUPLO sets were both fun for young fans, and provided educational value as well. Many DUPLO sets teach kids basic concepts, like counting, in a playful and accessible way. You can find lots more information about DUPLO, as well as ideas for fun activities, here.

We’re always working to make DUPLO sets even better and more fun. You can always check out LEGO.com to see what’s new!
