Searching for sustainable solutions

Resources should be sourced and used responsibly, so they will still benefit future generations. We are constantly in pursuit of more sustainable solutions to our raw materials consumption and our packaging. We also work towards improving our waste management and eliminating waste in our production.

  • We commit to finding sustainable alternatives to our current oil-based raw materials by 2030.
  • All LEGO® products come in sustainable packaging that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
  • We want to improve our waste management, and we aim for zero waste in our production.

Our search for more sustainable materials
We are constantly searching for more sustainable materials. Our long-term vision states that by 2030, we want to have identified and implemented sustainable alternatives to the current raw materials used for our LEGO products. In our search for more sustainable alternatives, we collaborate with companies and institutions that develop materials with a reduced environmental impact. The alternatives should offer the same safety, quality, durability and play experiences as our current materials.

Our sustainable packaging
Paper and cardboard are the main components of our LEGO packaging and building instructions, and we share a responsibility to preserve forests so that they are still here for future generations. Since 2014, all LEGO products come in smaller boxes, saving approximately six thousand tonnes of cardboard a year. Our LEGO boxes and LEGO building instructions are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This means our packaging comes from sustainable sources where trees are not used at a greater rate than the forest can reproduce. It also means that animal and plant life are protected and forestry workers have fair and decent working conditions.

Our approach to waste management
Reduce, reuse and recycle are the cornerstones of our approach to waste management based on a mind-set of achieving zero waste. We therefore work to reduce our inputs, reuse materials where we can, and recycle items like paper, cardboard, wood and metal. To meet the growing demand for our products, the quantity of LEGO bricks we produce is increasing and so is our consumption of raw materials. This highlights the necessity for us to keep improving our management of waste, and we will continue to work hard to meet our target of recycling 93% of our waste.

What to do with LEGO bricks when you are finished playing with them
You can combine our high-quality and durable LEGO elements in countless ways and play with them for years to come. All LEGO bricks produced since 1958 and up until today fit together, and we always do our best to ensure that all LEGO bricks stay in play. A product this durable should not be thrown away. If you no longer play with your LEGO bricks and they are still in good condition, we encourage you to donate them or pass them on to family and friends so that more children can be inspired and play with LEGO bricks.
