Tell Your Unique LEGO® Star Wars™ Story in Stop-Motion

Tell a Story and Film It in Stop-Motion!

Ever wanted to be a galactic filmmaker? Now is your chance! Gather your LEGO® Star Wars™ sets, grab a smartphone, and get ready to create an interstellar masterpiece. Whether it’s a daring escape from an AT-ST or a secret meeting on the Millennium Falcon, you’re the director of play!

Time: 30 minutes
What you’ll need:

  • The stars of the show: LEGO Star Wars SMART Play™ sets like Luke’s Red Five X-Wing (75423), Millennium Falcon (75426), or AT-ST Attack on Endor (75424). Luke’s Red Five X-Wing includes a SMART Brick, so be sure to include that one!
  • The tech: A smartphone or tablet with the LEGO Play app (it has a nifty stop-motion camera built right in!).
  • The magic: A SMART Brick to provide real-time ‘soundstage’ effects while you build.
  • The props: Anything from around your house – books for buildings, cushions for mountains, or even a desk lamp for dramatic lighting!

Director’s Cut: Step by Step

Step 1: Script Your Saga

Every great movie starts with a great story. Will your hero find a hidden treasure? Or will they have to dodge a laser-firing Imperial turret? Write down a few ‘plot points’ to guide your filming.

Step 2: Scout Your Location

Find the perfect spot in your house to build your set. Use your household props to create an environment for your minifigures to traverse. Remember: a pile of laundry makes a surprisingly good alien landscape.

Step 3: ‘Puppeteer’ Your Heroes

To make your characters move smoothly, you can build a small ‘rig’ out of extra LEGO pieces to hold them in place, or simply use your hands to ‘puppeteer’ them between frames.

Step 4: Start the Countdown!

Open the stop-motion camera in the LEGO Play app. Set up your first scene, take a photo, move your minifigure just a tiny bit, and take another! Over the course of 10-30 minutes, you’ll have a sequence of images ready to roll. Time your shots carefully – if you want to have a SMART Brick enhance the scene or battle with lights, be sure to include one from the Luke’s Red Five X-Wing.

Step 5: Zoom Into the Drama

Don’t forget the close-ups! Moving the camera in close to your SMART Play minifigures helps capture the emotion of the scene.

Step 6: Premiere Your Movie!

Once you’ve finished clicking, hit play to watch your movie come to life. Narrate the voices yourself, add some sound effects, and share your masterpiece with friends and family.
