Connecting your LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 to Wi-Fi

You can use Wi-Fi to communicate wirelessly between the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 Intelligent Brick and EV3 Software! Wi-Fi has a longer range than Bluetooth® but uses more power, and you’ll need a wireless router to set it up.

Follow these steps to connect your EV3 P-Brick to Wi-Fi:

  1. Connect a Wi-Fi dongle to the USB Host port on the P-Brick. We recommend the Netgear N150 Wireless Adapter (WNA1100). No other dongles are officially supported.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to choose Wi-Fi in the 'Settings' screen on the P-Brick.

Then, press the center button and a check mark will appear in the Wi-Fi box. You’ve enabled Wi-Fi and should see an  icon in the top left of the P-Brick Display.
  3. After choosing Wi-Fi on the Settings screen, use the arrow buttons to select Connections and press the center button for OK. The EV3 Brick will search for and list available Wi-Fi networks.
  4. Use the up and down buttons to find your network in the list. If the EV3 Brick isn’t already connected to your network (indicated by a check mark), choose your network by pressing the center button.
    • If the EV3 Brick doesn’t find your network in its search, the network might be hidden. To connect to a hidden network, choose "Add hidden".

  5. In the Network pop-up that appears, choose Connect and press OK with the Center button. You’ll now be asked to put in the encryption type (WPA2 or none) and network password using the buttons to navigate (uppercase and lowercase letters do matter here). If you’re connecting to a hidden network, you’ll also need to put in the network’s name.
    • Keep in mind that the EV3 Intelligent Brick only supports WPA2 encryption and your network password can’t contain special symbols, as they aren’t available on the EV3 keyboard.
  6. Once you’ve entered the right password, highlight the check mark and press the center button. You’ll now be connected to the network.

Once you’ve connected to a network using its password, the EV3 will remember that password in the future. Known networks are shown in the list with a * symbol.

To connect your software to your P-Brick:

  1. Using the USB cable, connect the P-Brick to the computer.
  2. Open the EV3 software. Choose the Wireless Setup tool in the Hardware Window (at the bottom right of the screen), or choose 'Wireless Setup' from the Tools Menu.
  3. The computer will show which networks it detects.

  4. Select the network you connected your P-Brick to and click on 'Connect' to set up a connection. To add a hidden network, click 'Add'. To edit the settings of a previously used network, click 'Edit'.
  5. Click 'OK' to establish a Wi-Fi connection. Once this is done, you can unplug the USB cable.
