    I think this Battery Box is very useful because you can give more power to your motors or to create a Power Functions model, but I'd like if it would be in set that motors, receivers and a remote control.

    I have one of these for my Lego AT-AT Walker that I got a few years ago. It worked great for that project and is hidden well, but now I am looking to build a really nice Emerald Night Train. I think I am going to pay the 75 buck to get the Rechargable Battery and Charger, but I guess I am wondering what the difference really is other than the strange box design and the fact that this one uses batteries. I saw that someone below said they just chopped of the plastic ends and it worked well, but I'm having a hard time imagining me doing a hack job on plastic.

    This is a vital part of the power functions set, though LEGO could have designed it a bit better. Being so big, it is hard to integrate into a model and keep the model's coolness. I have to recommend this to anyone with power functions, for obvious reasons, but otherwise it is useless. It is not aesthetically pleasing, but necessary. It also does not have a very good system for accidentally leaving it on. It should have an automatic shut-down switch, because it drains batteries incredibly quickly. I use Duracell batteries, and they last for 2 months, tops. I think that there should be another power junction on the box. I know that you can stack the power cords on top of each other, but it would look better to have another. This way the cords would reach further. I am not fussed with the issue about the placing of batteries, for I can just use one of the cover plates to lever the batteries out. One of the best things about this part is the amount of peg-holes. This makes it much more versatile in the way of positioning, despite it's shape and size. I would make sure to get this with at least 2 motors, either type, and an IR receiver.

    A good battery box design

    The Power Functions battery box is nearly identical in design to the older 9V Battery Box, which comes in the 8287 Technic Motor Set (2006) and the 4895 Creator Motion Power set (2006), but with some minor improvements. One definate improvement is the switch on top, which is much easier to use and can be moved using other technic elements, which can improve the integration of the battery box into the model. Another improvement is the new way of controlling motors and lights. Instead of simply changing the polarity over two wires, the new connection has four wires, where two have a constant difference, which powers the whole system, but the other two are controlled by a IR reciever or a switch. The battery box has 10 pinholes on each side, making integration with a model very easy, compared to using an older studed battery box. Unfortunately, on one side the batteries are very fiddly to replace, as one battery is half hidden under the edge of the box. Overall, this is a very well designed battery box, and is easy to integrate with technic models.
