42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator
With seven motors, two Control+ Smart Hubs and more LEGO® Technic™ pieces than any other Technic set that has come before it, the LEGO Technic 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator is definitely best for more advanced LEGO Technic builders.
The building process
First you add the Control+ elements. Then you’ll need to build the structure around them using the Technic pieces. Like a lot of powered models, you’ll need to take care to make sure you didn’t forget a piece—it’ll be super hard to add it in later on.
There are three separate sections to build! The pieces are split between the six numbered bags for each section.
- The treaded base
(includes a Control+ Smart Hub, two Control+ XL Motors, and a Control+ Large Motor) - The frame for the excavator
(includes the second Control+ Smart Hub and XL motor) - The mechanical arm
(includes the last Control+ Large Motor as well as six pneumatic pumps to control the arm’s movement)
In the final steps, you’ll add the finishing touches for the operator’s station, the walkway, the guard rails around the body, the exhaust pipes on the back and the pneumatic tube system.
You’ll also get 100 2x2 round studs for playing with the model.
Connecting to the app
Once you’ve finished building, it’s easy to connect to the Control+ app. First, you’ll need to connect to the Control+ hub. It’s located in the main body – you can get to it through a hatch built on the top of the set. Once the first hub’s connected, the app will need to connect the second hub in the driving base. If all the motors in the model are connected to the correct ports defined by the building instructions, the model should easily connect to the app.
In the app, you’ll have two joysticks and two dial controls to control the excavator. You can drive while rotating the body a full 360 degrees and the mechanical arm can be raised and lowered while you’re moving the shovel.
Turning off the Hubs after use
It’s easy to turn off the Control+ hubs after use. Just close out of the app on your device and the hubs will automatically disconnect and power off. You can also hold down each hub’s power button for about three seconds if you’d like to power them down that way.
