What is Diwali and why is it celebrated?

Observed over 5 days, Diwali is known as the Indian festival of lights and is celebrated by people of many faiths, including Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Jains – in homes all over the world.

Why is Diwali the festival of lights?

For many, Diwali marks a legendary triumph of light over darkness, and for others it represents spiritual enlightenment. It’s celebrated with candles, lanterns and even fireworks.

In 2022, the Festival of Diwali is observed on October 24. However, there are 5 days of celebrations, ranging from Saturday 22 October through Wednesday 26 October.

What are Diwali traditions?

Most traditions of Diwali bring families together to celebrate over a 5-day period – visiting, welcoming others into your home, playing games and sharing meals together. One common tradition is to decorate the entrance of a home with rangoli –festive and geometric designs made from colored rice powder and chalk – as you ready your home for guests.

What gifts are given at Diwali?

Sharing gifts of light and comfort is typical of the Diwali tradition. Candles, lanterns, foods, and craft activities are most common, as they bring people together.
