7 ways using play can save the day!

Looking for some ‘play-spiration’? Here are some fun ideas for how to think outside the box with the LEGO® bricks you already have at home!

The first rule of playing is... there are no rules! We know there is no ‘right way’ to play. Ten minutes and a pile of LEGO® bricks is all you and your kids need to build a masterpiece that might only last until dinner time, but a memory that will last a lot longer. Here are some fun tips – not rules! – for when you’re looking for a little ‘play-spiration’!

Bored kids on board?

We get it, car trips can be LONG, but with a simple plastic container, a few handfuls of bricks and a LEGO baseplate, you have all you need to keep your children entertained for hours in the backseat. Let their imaginations run wild, or better yet, buy yourself a bit of time to pack the car by asking them to prepare pictures to replicate! And voilà, no more “are we there yet?”!

Rainy-day target practice!

Desperate to keep your active kids occupied when it’s too rainy to head to a playground or even squelch around the garden? Who says playing with LEGO bricks has to be sedentary? Create some elaborate LEGO targets and use some birthday party leftovers to create a ping-pong ball catapult! Keep moving the targets further away to keep things interesting.

LEGO® brick lucky dip

Looking for the perfect party game? Forget ‘pass the present’. Instead, pop handfuls of your LEGO bricks into a few bags and hand one to each player. Borrow a timer from another game and give the kids one minute to create their best house, then a cat, then a spaceship... The possibilities are as endless as their imaginations!

One-word responses?

Tired of only hearing ‘fine’ when you ask your kids about their day (complete with sigh and exaggerated eye-roll)? They don’t always communicate the way we might, but they will probably be more interested if you ask them to create a scene of the day that celebrates an exciting or inspiring moment! Maybe you could create one too!

Flip cup tic-tac-toe

Ramp up the competition in this reimagining of an old classic. Get the kids to flip a cup so it lands upright, then place a LEGO brick onto the tic tac toe board – the first to get three in a row wins!

LEGO brick treasure hunt

Another winner for a rainy day, a LEGO brick treasure hunt can keep your children active for hours! Hide LEGO bricks all around the house and draw a treasure map to show where they might be in each room. If it’s a competition, make it more interesting by giving different colored bricks a different value! There’s no limit to the fun you can enjoy with a few leftover LEGO bricks!
