Recreate your favorite moments from The Goonies
“Hey, you guys!”
“Hey, you guys!”
If you’re going to recreate movie scenes, then you need the cast of characters. And this set won’t disappoint. It comes with 12 LEGO® minifigures, including Mike “Mikey” Walsh, Richard “Data” Wang, Clark “Mouth” Devereaux, Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen, Mama Fratelli, Andrea “Andy” Carmichael and One-Eyed Willy. It’s a lot, but as Marina says, we couldn’t leave anyone out.
“The cast of The Goonies consists mostly of kids, all of them with very different and adorable characteristics,” says Marina. “So, we couldn’t exclude any of them! It wouldn’t be an adventure without ‘bad guys’, so we also included the Fratellis, and our story wouldn’t have been complete without the legendary pirate and expert obstacle course designer, One-Eyed Willy. The minifigures have a variety of accessories, like Data’s spy contraptions, or Mouth’s hairbrush, because he has to look cool even when bad guys are chasing him inside a cave! We even designed new elements for Sloth’s pirate hat and bandana, and Mama Fratelli’s hair and beret.”
The set has the external shell of the pirate ship, which is obviously from the movie, but it also recalls one of Vaggelis’ favorite themes from his childhood.
“My favorite theme of all time is Pirates,” he says. “I consider the 1989 Pirates sets as one of the best LEGO® themes that have affected me not only consciously, but subconsciously as well.”
Use the treasure map element to find your way to the hideaway of the bad guys. When you do, you’ll start to see the many Easter eggs the team included in the build.
“There are so many that were included and even more that were not included,” says Anthony. “Some we snuck in were the Fratellis’ printing press in the basement, the brown water Mama Fratelli offers the gang and the Wanted poster of the Fratellis.”
Once you’ve found the hideaway, you can send a minifigure through the secret fireplace entrance to the caves and the pirate ship. Inside, you could even use the Copper Bones Skeleton Key to reveal the hidden trapdoor.
“I watched the movie multiple times, to make sure we would capture all the details!” says Marina.
That sounds like hard work, Marina!
“If you hit the wrong note, we’ll all ‘B-flat’!” Press the keys on the skeleton organ to break the floor and access the slide to the Inferno’s hideaway, where the octopus (from a deleted scene) is hiding. Every little detail is designed to remind you of the movie and to help you have an adventure of your own.
“The team and I were always looking to add storytelling to the build,” says Anthony. “And to see how we could include jokes and nods through graphics, and include our favorite scenes!”
While the Goonies get their hands on the gold, for many people, this movie has become a piece of treasure all of its own. We asked our designers why they thought that was.
“For me, it’s the friendship between the characters and this grand adventure they go on!” says Anthony. “It touches so many childhood fantasies of uncovering a hidden pirate map, discovering secrets, avoiding booby traps… and ultimately finding TREASURE!”
Marina agrees. “For people who grew up in the 80s, it brings a lot of nostalgia and memories of innocent times, friendship and adventures!”
Whether you remember seeing the movie back in the 80s or if you’re a newer fan, you can now go on your very own adventure thanks to Vaggelis, our team and the LEGO® Ideas The Goonies set.
