Play like it’s 1994 with the new LEGO® PlayStation™!

There was a time when hearing that iconic boot-up sound meant an entire weekend of adventure was about to begin. The original PlayStation® wasn’t just another gaming console, it transformed the way millions of people experienced gaming, introducing a new generation to cinematic worlds, unforgettable characters, and hours spent gathered around the television with friends.

Now, that icon of the late ‘90s has been recreated as a near-1:1 scale LEGO® model, inviting fans to relive those memories one brick at a time.

Built from memories

For Design Director Frédéric André, the project brought back memories of gaming long before the first brick was placed.

“I’ve always been a gamer, but I didn’t own a PlayStation® myself,” he says. “I’d go to my friend’s house, and we’d spend entire afternoons playing together.”

Those shared gaming sessions helped shape a model designed to feel instantly familiar, celebrating not just the console itself but the memories it created for an entire generation.

Capturing an icon in LEGO® bricks

Although the PlayStation® is instantly recognizable, recreating its distinctive shape in LEGO form required careful attention to every curve and proportion.

“The design of the console translated quite well into LEGO bricks,” Frédéric says. “We found nice and smooth transitions for the rounded corners. We also wanted the console to have a few interesting functions, like the opening lid, the light, and the connectivity with the controller.”

From the signature gray finish to the functioning Power and Open buttons, every detail was designed to feel authentic. The original controller plugs into the front of the console, just as fans will remember, while the carefully recreated front ports, familiar button layout, and near-1:1 scale help capture the unmistakable look of the original hardware.

Hidden inside, builders will also discover two brick-built dioramas celebrating Gran Turismo™ and Ape Escape™, small Easter eggs that pay tribute to two memorable moments in PlayStation® history and reward fans who look a little closer.

Engineering the authentic experience

Making the model feel like the original proved just as important as making it look like it.

“The lid opening was probably our biggest challenge,” Frédéric says. “Isaac, the set designer, tested several different mechanisms before finding the right solution. Using a Technic™ suspension element gave it the same satisfying feeling as pressing the button on the original console.”

Throughout the design process, the LEGO team worked closely with PlayStation®, using original schematics to recreate every subtle detail as faithfully as possible. That collaboration also led to the creation of new LEGO elements for the controller buttons and the console’s Open and Power buttons, helping preserve both the appearance and tactile feel that fans know so well.

“We wanted fans to recognize it immediately,” Frédéric says. “The dimensions, the controller, the ports, and the hidden game dioramas all contribute to that feeling.”
