Our top ten classic LEGO® Castle sets!

Join us as we rank our favorite ‘classic’ brick-built fortifications in our top 10 LEGO® Castle sets…

Ready for a medieval adventure? Look no further than LEGO® Castle! Debuting in 1978, this theme has captivated generations with its towering turrets, drawbridges and gallant knights. One of the first original themes to feature minifigures, it brought epic battles to life.

We’re delving into the classic sets from 1977 to 1990, a golden era of Castle factions, each with its own heraldry and identity. Maybe you were a fan of the Black Falcons, or perhaps the Crusaders, whose banners flew high above their strongholds? Wherever your loyalties lie, LEGO Castle created a world of adventure and endless possibilities.

Without further ado, it's time to storm the ramparts and let battle commence…

    10. 1988’s Knights’ Challenge (1584)

Gather round for the grand spectacle of the joust!

With eight minifigures split between Black Knights and Crusaders, this set fuels boundless imagination and replayability. Its diverse figures hint at a festive fair atmosphere. A set you’ll truly lance-a-lot with.

    9. 1987’s Battering Ram (6062)

The coolest battering since Fish ‘n’ Chips? Yep, 1987’s Battering Ram!

This modular castle wall seamlessly integrates into other sets, but we especially love it with Black Falcon’s Fortress (6074). With a rampart, working battering ram and six minifigures, it promises hours of play. Epic!

    8. 1987’s Camouflaged Outpost (6066)

A true fan favorite – the Forest People’s Camouflaged Outpost! Inspired by Robin Hood, it features hidden entrances, a secret door and lush greenery, embracing its stealthy theme.

Six minifigures, a treasure chest and a trusty horse make sure the excitement never ends. Unless you’re rich of course, then watch out…

    7. 1984’s Blacksmith Shop (6040)

The heat is on! This medieval marvel fits snugly into castle walls and was among the first to feature civilians doing ordinary jobs.

The rare brown cape is a standout, but what truly sets this set apart is its versatility – with an alternate tower build, every piece finds a use. Sure to fire you up!

    6. 1990’s King’s Mountain Fortress (6081)

Trump-uh-buh-duh-daaaaaah! Introducing one of the jewels in LEGO Castle’s crown.

This set earns its place for the stunning moulded baseplate alone, with luscious green hills and pebble detailing. But there’s more – a working drawbridge, a dungeon, a hidden trapdoor and even a glow-in-the-dark ghost. Spooky!

    5. 1978’s yellow Castle (375)

King Arthur. Robin Hood. The yellow Castle (375). Just listing legends…

The first LEGO Castle model set the standard for medieval builds. The bold yellow bricks (then the only available color for full castles) make it an eye-catching, nostalgic beacon of creativity and yellow…ness.

Some love it, some hate it. But those who love it, reeeally love it.

    4. 1984’s King’s Castle (6080)

Fit for a king, and then some! Its grand scale, twelve minifigures and intricate details make this set a classic.

As the original Lion Knights stronghold, it captures medieval essence perfectly. Some fans have argued that the castle’s a little lacking in color (nearly 70% of its pieces are grey), but we think it’s great.

All together now: long live the King(’s Castle)!

    3. 1988’s Black Monarch’s Castle (6085)

Bringing in the top three: Black Monarch’s Castle (6085). A complete castle experience, this set opens out for access, enclosing a courtyard for dynamic play or display. The black brick color, as opposed to the usual grey, makes this castle particularly imposing. We wouldn’t fancy being an attacking Forestperson, that’s for sure.

This set just screams power, and its 12 minifigure soldiers ensure hours (or years) of fun!

    2. 1986’s Guarded Inn (6067)

Coming in second is the fan favorite Guarded Inn (6067). Like the Blacksmith Shop, this set expands the castle world, bringing life beyond battles.

With charming red half-timbered panels, a detailed roof and countless play features, its popularity led to a 2001 re-release. Just look at the detail – from the goblets and the flowers to the frying pan and the weapons.

If it’s not obvious, we love this set. But not quite as much as...

    1. 1986’s Black Falcon’s Fortress (6074)

    THE king of the castles.

Need we say more? Okay... Iconic. Legendary. The coolest castle in LEGO history? Maybe all history?

No longer just generic knights, this faction-defining set delivers everything: an iconic stronghold, perfect minifigure count, amazing playability. The yellow Tudor panel adds a lived-in feel, for a good knight’s rest…

So good, we made it twice – check out the 2002 re-release and prepare to be blown away!

Well, what do you reckon? Did we lay siege to greatness?
