All about payment authorisations

With so many different payment methods available, you might have seen the term ‘payment authorisation’ and be wondering what that means. Or perhaps you’ve seen multiple charges for the same order and you’ve been a tad confused. Not to worry! We’ve put together some common questions and answers that we hope will help you.

What’s a payment authorisation?

When you place your order on LEGO.com, we need to make sure you have funds available for your purchase. As part of this process, your card provider will temporarily hold the amount needed to pay for your entire order. This temporary hold of funds is called a payment authorisation. This will likely appear as a ‘processing’ or ‘pending’ payment if you check your account, but it isn’t an actual charge.

How long will the funds be held?

The funds may be held for a few days to about a month. The amount of time varies depending on your card provider, so please check with them for full details.

My order was cancelled but I’m still seeing a charge on my statement

If your order is cancelled for any reason, the pending charge may still appear on your account for a short time until it's released by the card provider.

How does payment work for orders sent in multiple shipments?

Sometimes items aren’t available to ship right away (such as preorders and out of stock items) or they have to ship from different locations. When this happens, you won’t get everything at the same time and you’ll be charged for each shipment when it leaves our warehouse.

What if the original authorisation expires?

If the original authorisation is no longer available, we’ll need to authorise payment again when shipping your order.

If we’re unable to authorise your card or the funds are no longer available in your account at this time, we’ll send you an email asking you to call us.
