**"Localisation is more than translation—it’s about cultural connection"**

Peter grew up bilingual, with one foot in German culture and the other in American traditions. This unique background gave him an early appreciation for the nuances of language and how words shape meaning across different cultures.

“What excites me most about my role is working with people across the globe. I coordinate with teams and colleagues in Singapore, Shanghai, the U.S., and across Europe to ensure that our customer-facing content—from emails to website text—is culturally relevant and engaging.”

The job is not just about direct translation, but about ensuring that every message maintains the warmth, playfulness, and approachability that defines the LEGO Group brand.


**Refining the LEGO® brand’s Global Voice**

Peter’s work is essential in helping us communicate with our millions of consumers worldwide in a way that feels natural and authentic.
“Our department has one of the most rigorous, quality-driven processes in the business. That’s something that means a lot; it shows we’re constantly improving. Every time we refine our translations, we strengthen our connection with our markets.”

**"Cultural nuances make all the difference"**

One of Peter’s stand-out moments was helping us refine our communications for the Japanese market—a region where cultural and linguistic nuances are particularly complex.

“In the past, our translations were somewhat out of sync with cultural expectations. We knew we had to change that. Through better collaboration and a focus on market-specific communication styles, we’ve built trust and improved the way we engage with Japanese consumers.”

This success story reinforced Peter’s belief that localisation is about more than just language—it’s about respect, understanding, and cultural fluency.


**Bridging cultures, one word at a time**

Peter’s role isn’t just about perfecting grammar or syntax; it’s about adapting our playful, imaginative tone to different cultural expectations.

“Idioms, humour, and tone can vary dramatically from one language to another. An English phrase that works perfectly might sound awkward or even confusing in another language. Our job is to ensure that the whole experience feels seamless and joyful in every market, no matter what language it’s in.”

Peter finds that his background in both American and German cultures gives him an edge in understanding how different markets interpret formality, humour, and emotional expression.

“I remember coming down for a coffee one day and realising I was standing right behind Niels Christiansen, the CEO. The fact that there’s no rigid hierarchy, that you can strike up a conversation with anyone at any level—it’s something that sets us apart.”

“In every localisation project, we have a team of experts from different regions weighing in. It’s a real-time global conversation, with people offering insights and perspectives that I never would have thought of on my own. That’s what makes the work so rewarding.”

Making sure we never get lost in translation: Meet Peter 🧭

As **Finance Director for Global Stores**, **Mazen** plays a key role in bringing the magic to life for fans worldwide. For more than eight years, Mazen has been contributing to the success of the LEGO Group, with the last 1.5 years focused on making vital financial decisions that help shape the future of our stores.
   
“I work with people to ensure that we get to open more stores so that children can play even more with LEGO® bricks. 

Mazen’s work is focused on analysing the performance of existing LEGO stores and using data to guide decisions on where new stores should open.

"I look at everything related to how stores are performing. The key question I ask myself is what we can learn to do better. This analysis helps me, and my team identify success patterns from top-performing stores and apply those lessons to others. We’re able to learn a lot from this. Where should we open the next store? What should it look like? What are the different bricks that go into the model that will make that store work? It’s all there in the numbers.”

Every new store is built on this recipe of considerations, from the physical layout and customer flow to staffing and cost projections. 

"We want to make the store an opportunity for people to interact with LEGO products, see amazing 3D models, and experience the magic of the LEGO Group. My team and I work closely with the retail division to ensure each store is designed to engage visitors and create memorable experiences, while keeping a close eye on costs to ensure profitability.”

Innovation plays a central role in Mazen’s work, not only in terms of technology but also in rethinking processes.

"For me, innovation is twofold: one, what are the new tools out there that can help me, and my team do a better job? And two, how do we reassess the way we do things to see if we can do them differently? Embracing new tools allows us to do so much, whether it’s streamlining data visualisation and governance or making our decision-making processes faster and more reliable.”

Beyond tools and technology, Mazen is constantly challenging the status quo. 

"We might be looking at why we invest a certain amount in lighting or shelves, or why we structure lease contracts a certain way. I’m always asking, why do we do it like this? Can it be different?”

“Take traditional lease agreements as a case in point. Analysing everything from risk mitigation to financial structuring makes all the difference. Our goal is to ensure that contracts are flexible, scalable, and sustainable as the company grows globally. There’s a lot to consider. But the challenge is a big part of why I turn up for work every day.” 

"What I really like about being here is how collaborative colleagues are. There’s always an assumption of best intent. Each country might have a different way of doing things but, in the end, it all boils down to taking best practices and making it fit. It’s much like the System in Play. If it fits it, it works. That’s what matters.”

In his role as a **Software Engineer**, **Peder** helps put the fun into the LEGO® Building Instructions. It’s his job to enable curious minds to experience the joy of play through collaboration.

“Day-to-day, I work on Build Together, a feature that transforms building LEGO sets from a solo activity into a shared experience. We provide the tools for families and friends to connect through building.”

“I joined the Build Together team just as they started transforming it from a small experiment into a fully supported experience. It's been amazing to help shape the project from a technical standpoint and see it grow.”

“My work goes beyond coding. As engineers, we participate in user tests and brainstorm with designers. The entire team values diverse perspectives and knowledge because we know it leads to a better product.”

Peder came to us via a love of LEGO sets.

“I have fond childhood memories of building with Technic LEGO. Figuring out how things worked and creating my own functional "machines" made me feel like an engineer.”

“My dream of working at the LEGO Group evolved over time. As a kid, I wanted to build models for a living. Later, I became interested in tech and dreamed of working on LEGO games. Now, I'm close to doing just that.”

“The idea of working for a company that brought me so much joy felt natural. I was also finishing my Master’s in Software Engineering and wanted a break from theoretical learning. A job at the LEGO Group seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

“The reality of working here has exceeded my expectations. I heard about the playful atmosphere, but as a student, I doubted it. I quickly learned that adults could have fun at work.”


With the support of the team and the trust of the wider business, Peder has thrived on tackling challenging tasks. 

“This was true even as a new graduate. It’s allowed me to explore and learn. The team's natural curiosity and trust in each other creates an ideal learning environment. My biggest challenge is speaking up in broader forums. That's partly why I joined the ambassador programme, to push myself.”

“As a team, we tackle a variety of problems, from technical to UX. Early in our refactor, we focused on sharing architecture with the solo builder experience. As Build Together grew, this became a limitation. I proposed a rework and was trusted to implement it, even as an Associate Engineer. It was a success, and such experiences build great momentum.”

So what does working here mean for Peder’s own development?

“I'm empowered to be brave and curious, to strive for knowledge even if I might fail. There’s also a great work-life balance with flexible options, while my team is excellent at checking in on each other and sharing the workload.”

“Beyond courses and colleagues, the shared value of curiosity is key. It empowers me to say, "I don't know this, but I can learn it," instead of shying away from challenges. I learn best by exploring and getting hands-on. My team tackles the right problems at the right time, creating a pragmatic development process.”


Ultimately, Peder's work is about engaging our fans in exploring through building.

“We once had a "sky's the limit" workshop where we embraced the "Brave" mindset and explored wild ideas. It was a day of prototyping, chatting, and learning. While none of our creations made it directly into the product, we still draw inspiration from that day.”

As one of our **Talent Acquisition Managers**, **Lissa** is driven by her passion for people and belief in the power of play. With over five years' experience with us, she plays a crucial role in welcoming new colleagues to the business collaborative work environment. 

“I’m part of the welcome committee for our fabulous new hires. It’s my job to roll out the red carpet and make sure our new joiners have the best experience from day one. Our culture is one of the best and I want to ensure everyone is excited to begin their journey of learning, building, growing and having fun.” 

Lissa works alongside colleagues in Boston and Mexico and is inspired by meeting and developing people from all around the world.

“It's so cool to meet people from diverse cultures and learn about their traditions. I’m often asked to lead training sessions for our team and occasionally to facilitate company-wide initiatives such as Purpose to Impact or Leadership Playground sessions. I find it rewarding to witness those 'aha!' moments and see people grow.” 

Lissa began her career in recruitment which enabled her to hone her skills in talent acquisition and relationship building.   

“Over time, I’ve expanded my expertise to include facilitating training sessions, project management, optimising processes and contributing to strategic initiatives. I’ve also had opportunities to collaborate on global projects but most of all, I am continuously learning.” 

“Throughout my career here, I’ve been fortunate to have had exceptional leaders who not only provided me support and guidance but also placed their trust and faith in me. Their belief in my abilities empowered me to be brave, push my boundaries and achieve milestones. Their confidence in me fuelled my motivation to continue to grow.” 

“In terms of my role, it’s enabled me to proactively identify inefficiencies within our processes and implement solutions that drive efficiency across our team.”

When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Lissa is in no doubt:

In **Mette’s** world, every day with us is an opportunity to make an impact, both for herself and those around her. Her role may be behind the scenes, but it has a profound impact on our digital transformation. 

“My daily work is all about ensuring that our fantastic software engineers are able to deliver high quality digital products. This could mean anything from managing our external consultants or tracking our finances, to foreseeing the needs of our digital products with regards to software licences.” 
 
“All of this impacts our Digital deliveries, indirectly. If we are over or underspending on our Digital budgets, all eyes will be on me. The same goes for hiring the best external consultants. Quickly and efficiently.” 

One of the things Mette treasures most about her role is her team's diversity.

“We come from such wide-ranging cultural and professional backgrounds. It creates a dynamic workplace where you learn something new every day. This plays a major role in working with external consultants and managing vendors. It’s become an amazing collaboration between various stakeholders, and I always get energised by finding the perfect match for our product teams.”

Mette’s career has already covered a lot of ground. From her initial role as an Assistant, she moved into a Tech Ops Specialist role. She then went on to be promoted to **Senior Technical Operations Specialist** two years ago.

Here, my manager asked about my next career step within six weeks of joining. You don’t come here for a job; it’s about finding a career path. One of the initiatives Mette has been proud to be a part of is rolling out Allyship training across our Digital Technology teams. Our focus on well-being, people-first values, and D&I initiatives is something that resonates deeply.  

“I’ve been heard on issues like the lack of gender representation, and projects have been initiated because of it. The focus on being an ally was partially my idea. The aim was to get a shared understanding of Diversity & Inclusion, which helps create a safe and welcoming work environment for everyone, irrespective of who you are.”

“As a single parent of two, I was nervous about balancing my career with my family responsibilities. But I needn’t have been. My children are my priority, and this is always respected. I’m encouraged to flex my time in whatever way suits my family best. I always get the support I need during challenging times - whether it’s from my People Leader, my colleagues, or the business as a whole.”  

Mette’s learning journey at the LEGO Group is ongoing.  

“My People Leader supports me a lot, and my colleagues help me learn every day. In our full-day monthly team meetings, we always make time for play. It creates a fun working environment and a safe space where we can be both professional and personal with each other.”

**Michele** has been here over a year now. But, for him, every day feels like day one. In the best possible way. He dreams up new ways to play with LEGO® bricks. 

So what’s it like being a builder and playtime scientist?

“Creating new types of play is so much fun. Which kind of makes sense because that’s what our products are designed for. Fun and learning. That’s what my work is all about. By inventing special LEGO experiences with a bit of technology inside, I help make playtime more exciting and magical.” 

“The impact of my work comes to life in kids’ own hands. It's all about adding new layers of interactivity, but most importantly, it's in kids’ smiles and the fun they have.”

Michele is part of the Creative Play Lab team which thrives on its unique blend of skills and backgrounds.

“We have experts in technology and digital innovation, alongside toy designers, engineers, educators, and child psychologists. This ensures our digitally enabled LEGO experiences are not only technologically advanced but also deeply engaging and educational.”

“The whole team is extremely supportive, and we learn from each other. The LEGO Group promotes a healthy sharing culture where ideas are circulated. I don’t feel micromanaged, but I can always ask for feedback and advice.”

“We often observe and interact with children in play sessions, understanding how they naturally play. Our work is at the cutting edge, exploring the use of technology in storytelling in ways that have never been done before in children's toys.”

Karma is how Michele explains how he came to work with us. But there’s a bit more to it.

“It feels like everything I’ve done has prepared me for this role. Call it destiny. I feel there is no other place I would like to be right now.”

“In Play Discovery, we blend imagination with cutting-edge technology to redefine play. It operates more like a start up. The process involves research, ideation, prototyping, user testing, iterative development, collaboration, and technology integration. We aim to seamlessly blend invisible technology with physical play to enhance interactivity without screens.”

“One project I'm proud of is Bob the Robot, a wearable cardboard robot I worked on for the Nordic Game Jam. Players wear the costume and navigate themselves using a camera feed mounted 50 metres above. The objective is to catch air balloons with a basket on Bob’s head. It was a truly collaborative effort and a lot of fun.”

The most rewarding moments, Michele believes, come from seeing a child having a great time with our products. He’s also immersed in our culture and loves being part of an amazing team.”

“What makes my job so worthwhile is when I see curious minds playing with a prototype or realising the value of the seed of an idea.”

“My team supports a culture of continuous learning, creative freedom, work-life balance, and recognition. The one aspect I value the most is inclusivity and allowing every voice to be heard, building on each other's ideas.”

“There is great attention to safeguarding time off and ensuring everyone feels they can take care of their family if needed. The LEGO Group does a lot to promote curiosity and discovery.”

“We have a strong sharing culture where we learn from each other. We have collaboration sessions where we share references and look critically at toys and experiences. Apart from the great onboarding process, I was also granted access to 3rd party learning apps and lots of online documents.”

The combination of collaborative team dynamics, supportive leadership, access to resources, and an innovative culture means Michele is able to succeed in his role. But what are the challenges?

“Fast context switching and balancing quality with quantity are good examples.  Being a global company means often joining online meetings across multiple locations and time zones. When looking at physical experiences, being around the same table in person can make a difference, but our teams are really good at bridging the gap.”  

Play and fun are deeply embedded in Michele’s work. So what does this look like? 

“Every day, I'm part of a team dedicated to creating play experiences that entertain, educate, challenge, and stimulate the minds and imaginations of children. We engage in regular team-building exercises that explore play, including a global Play Day experience once a year.”

“Play is central to my job. It's both the method and the outcome of the work. Without playing, we wouldn’t be able to innovate in a way kids would find meaningful. Play means exploring freely and without fear of failing, which is essential to experiment at the edge.”

“As a senior play inventor, my work is fundamentally connected to the LEGO Group's purpose: to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow. What could be better than that?”

In his role as **Social Responsibility Consultant**, **Filipe** is a committed ambassador for play. Whether it’s creating opportunities for children to do so more often - or convincing their parents why this is important - it’s his job to support charities so they can make play happen.

"My role is that of being a national bridge between the LEGO Group and UK organisations working with children, including NGOs, charities, and schools. Leveraging the LEGO Group’s resources to create social impact programming that champions children’s rights to learn and play, elevates the reputation of the LEGO® brand, and engages LEGO colleagues as ambassadors for Learning Through Play."

"I use a mix of strategy, partnership management, operations, and hands-on work. Sometimes, I'm deep in spreadsheets, figuring out logistics; other times, I'm brainstorming on educational programming with partners; others I might even be running a play session at a library. It's a dynamic role that keeps me on my toes.”

One of the key aims of Filipe and his team is to help break down the barriers to play in local communities.

“Our biggest focus at the moment is driving a consortium of five charity partners working in Tower Hamlets. Based on an externally commissioned needs analysis, we have identified this area as having significant socio-economic challenges. We are working together to provide equitable access to learning and play opportunities for the children there."

“We're training educators, supporting community clubs, running workshops in museums, encouraging parent meetups, and even supporting an app that helps parents engage in playful learning with their children. It's a holistic approach that addresses the complex issues these communities face.”

Filipe sees play as a powerful tool. In the right hands, it can achieve surprising outcomes.

“We all share a belief in the power of learning through play. We see play as essential for developing the skills children need to succeed in school and in life. My role is about maximising play opportunities, especially for those who might not have easy access to them.

"And of course play is just as important in how we approach our own work. We're encouraged to be curious, brave, and experimental in our work. This creates a fun and engaging environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute and make a difference."

“I started out as an intern and quickly found myself taking on more and more responsibility. The company's trust in us and its commitment to our development is probably a big part of why I’ve been here for so long. But more than this, I love being part of a purpose-driven company that genuinely cares about making a positive impact on the world."

“Our work in social responsibility is a testament to that. We're not just talking about helping children; we're actively working to make it happen.”

With a background in electronics engineering and a lifelong connection to LEGO®, **Mikkel** is uniquely suited for his role as a **Firmware Engineer**. Through his work, he’s able to indulge his passion for empowering young learners through technology.

"I've always been fascinated by technology and its potential to enhance learning. Joining LEGO Education has allowed me to combine my interest in technology with my love for LEGO bricks. It’s incredibly fulfilling to make a real difference in the lives of the curious minds we seek to inspire and educate."

"I write the code that makes LEGO SPIKE Prime hubs work. You could say I program the brain of these hubs, enabling them to respond to commands like spinning a motor or turning on a light."

Mikkel's work involves using state-of-the-art technologies to solve complex problems and create innovative solutions.

"I get to deploy cutting-edge tools and techniques to develop firmware that powers the LEGO SPIKE Prime experience. It can be challenging at times, but as I say, incredibly rewarding too."

"I've gone from writing a lot of code to having a lot of responsibility in testing what we release. As quality and functionality are both key focuses, this is a critical part of my job. I spend a lot of time building fun projects and still use my code to bring them to life. It's a great way to ensure that the firmware is working as intended and to identify any potential issues."

The collaborative and supportive environment here is another aspect of his working life that Mikkel is keen to emphasise:

"One of the things I enjoy most about my job is being part of a world-class team where learning from each other is a top priority. We're constantly sharing knowledge and ideas, and always looking for new ways to improve our work. This is fortunate as my role comes with its fair share of challenges too."

"Bugs in the code can be a major headache. They can be time-consuming to solve, and the root cause is often a mystery. But issues like these also provide valuable learning opportunities, as they reveal areas of the code that need further refinement."

In spite of the challenges, Mikkel embraces his work and rewarding.

"There's nothing quite like seeing young learners use our products to gain the same knowledge and skills that I've acquired. It's a powerful reminder of the impact that my work has on the future of education."

Mikkel's connection to LEGO goes beyond his professional role. It’s almost a family affair:

"I've been a LEGO enthusiast all my life. When I was younger, I worked at LEGOLAND for seven years. Several of my family members also work here. Joining the company was always a dream of mine, and being part of LEGO Education has been an added bonus."

"We’re creating a new paradigm for learning. By combining play with technology, we're empowering children to become the builders and innovators of tomorrow."
