Video game-themed activities for kids

We. Love. GAMING! We love our characters colorful, our worlds wonderful, and our storylines sensational. And there are tons of fantastic games to choose from to fit whatever mood and vibe.

That said, it’s good to take a break from the screen now and again. If you’ve got kids who love gaming, then you’ll know that convincing them to put down the controller can be tricky. It helps if you’ve got a couple of great non-gaming activities up your sleeve.

To help you out on this critical mission, we’ve got five super creative video game-themed activities to keep kids entertained and engaged between screen times. Bonus round: you can do them together as a family!

So, ready player one, as we take a quick trip through fun-filled activities for gamer kids.

1. Build a winner’s trophy

A great way to start off your gaming-based building quest is by building your very own trophy, just like the ones your kids are used to winning in their favorite games. The options are vast: are you going for gold, silver, or... thinking really outside the box here, hippopotamus snot? Does your trophy have handles on the side? How tall is it? While you build, you could have a chat about how you’d win your trophy in your own gaming world – bet your kids have lots of ideas! Maybe the trophy could become something that they can win by completing the other four challenges here. Or maybe it’s a super awesome participation trophy. You decide.

2. Build a brick island paradise

Rule no. 1 when you design your own little island: dream big! You could sketch it on paper before you start building, and have a big family brainstorm about your island must-haves. A house? Obviously. A pool? Definitely. A UFO landing pad? Absolutely.

No need whatsoever for complicated building techniques or too-big builds; just focus on firing up your kids’ imaginations and dreaming up possibilities for their island. Tip: Nothing makes a playful island pop like a handful of islander minifigures to call it home.

3. Create your own biome

Are your kids into Minecraft®? Then they’ll know about biomes. Are they into other games? Then they’ll know about worlds, or environments. Think of them as specific mini worlds or spaces with their own features: flowers, trees, animals – sometimes even weather! Forests, deserts, oceans, volcanoes, planets... You can have hours of fun building them and bringing them to life. Luscious green rainforest or bright-yellow desert? What animals live in your biome? What creatures roam around? We can’t wait for you to get started.

4. Build a secluded shelter

Bring a bit of the great outdoors into your home with a small-scale building project based on a ‘shelter’. You can inspire yourselves on the shelters in LEGO® Fortnite®, or build something altogether different. Add in walls, windows, rooms, doors, and don’t be afraid to decorate with some greenery both inside and out. Have a chat while you build – what’s in the shelter? And outside? Who’s it for? Is it a place to hang with friends? Maybe you need more rooms! Did we hear cozy gaming nook?

5. Build the fastest shoe

And now, footwear. You may have heard about fast fashion, so this challenge is – well, it’s fast alright! Gamers know all about clothing, armor and accessories (skins), and how the right gear can turbocharge their in-game abilities. Here’s how you can design a shoe that is as fast as it is cool. You could look at your kids’ own favorite pair of shoes for inspiration, and let them go wild with creative customizations. Add jet engines to the heel, put wings on the sides, or design something completely different. Whatever it is, it’s got to be fast!

Mission complete!

We know that sometimes getting your kids to power down from their favorite game can be tricky, but as you can see, there are lots of ways for your kids to keep fueling their passion for their favorite games when the power is turned off. These ideas will help you build on their love for gaming, adding creativity and imagination to the mix. By the time they’re done building, they might even have earned a little screen time!
