    Doesn't quite hit the spot

As a (former) palaeontologist, this set was a very welcome present. And for sure, the models do look very good, and the design work is extremely clever. When you build the models, there are those lovely moments when you suddenly see what the designer had in mind, after being mystified for the past few steps what on Earth you were building. So why not a five-star rating? Primarily because the builds just aren't robust. I expect an official LEGO set to be solid enough I can pick it up without it disintegrating, but that isn't the case here. The pterodactyl is fine, and removed from its stand, perfectly swooshable. But the triceratops and the tyrannosaur are very fragile, especially the triceratops. There is almost no way to pick the triceratops up except by the stand that doesn't result in some part of it being dislodged. There are many sections literally held on with a single stud, and it doesn't make for these to break off. The tyrannosaur is marginally better, but still very delicate. So while you do create models that look good, the two main models are very much look-but-don't-touch, which just doesn't seem right with LEGO. After a few days, I broke the models up and put them into ziplock bags for storage, something I did with a vague sense of disappointment. Indeed, of all the Ideas sets I have, this is probably the first one that hasn't left me thinking 'wow, that was an amazing build!'. Instead, I'm impressed with the art, but not with the engineering.

Could be better, but great set

And again we got the 2 mainstream dinosaur. Trex and Triceratops are overused and boring. There are many more popular species what can make money to Lego. The Trex design is easily convertible to a Spinosaurus, and the Trike is a half Stegosaurus. A raptor or a hadrosauridae can make profit too. All children knows Parasaurolophus and the grown ups like the less known species too I am sure :) The set does not contain any alternate build. In my opinion this set is desperate to get a large herbivore model which can be build from the other 3 dino. Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus are iconic beasts. The set is anatomically correct. Lots of details are recognisable. For example the cheekbone and the horn placement of the Trike is very accurate. The head and the legs of the Rex are good too. The species has a good scale to each other. The structure is squishy a bit, but nothing annoying. On the underside of the Rex tail, the spikes can fall off if you touch them. The Rex can't hold its head on the last vertebra. It is not a big problem, but his neck will always be curved. The pterosaurus is sitting on a flexible rod which is good for custom poses but it has a huge play. The dinosaurs are fixed into their platforms. Secure but not versatile. The detailing is comes from a ton of 1x1 item and other parts are repeating too. So if you buy this set you going to have a good collection of some parts for other projects :) Overall these animals are an elegant decoration for any room.

    Amazing!

This is my second lego set. Really gotten into it recently and when I saw this I instantly purchased. I was a little put off with all the white and wether or not it would be a problem defining what bits were what but that wasn't the case. The instructions were easy to follow and made it simple as possible. No repetition in the build either which made building this go very quickly! The actual dinos themselves look fantastic, It was really satisfying after building all three and taking a step back, especially with the T-Rex. Definitely no playability in these, they've earned top spot on my display shelves.

I have been a fan of dinosaurs since I was a child and when I saw this set I couldn't help myself and had to buy it. I like the fact that the 3 models have an increasing complexity of the build: pterodactyl (less pieces) -> triceratops -> T-Rex (the one with more pieces). I have built one dinosaur per day to distribute the building time. The level of detail is really nice and I appreciated the presence of the stands, on which you can put your minifigs or additional items to add some "life" to the scenario. The only complaint I have is for the joint of the T-Rex head, the weight of which makes impossible to lift it and fix it in an upward position. Nevertheless, T-Rex looks great even with its head down. I look forward to buy more LEGO Ideas sets because they really are a breath of fresh air and tackle unusual and different themes!
