A Guide to LEGO® Star Wars™ Helmets: Part Two

A Guide to LEGO® Star Wars™ Helmets: Part Two

For the third and fourth waves of LEGO® Star Wars™ helmets, the collection took steps into a larger world.

If you’re reading this, we take it you’ve checked out Part One of our Guide to LEGO Star Wars Helmets? If not – then uh-oh… the Emperor does not tolerate such oversights! Read it here before you awaken the wrath of the Dark Side.

The most recognizable helmets in the Star Wars universe tend to appear in the Original Trilogy, so focusing on those movies to begin the Helmet Collection made the most sense. However, with this range properly established by 2022, it could expand to other areas of the universe, including beloved characters from The Mandalorian™ and Star Wars: The Clone Wars™. Let’s journey to a galaxy far, far away…

    A heroic turn

Much like their Imperial counterparts, Rebel forces often don helmets for battle. By far the most famous of these is the Luke Skywalker (Red Five) Helmet (75327), worn at the Battle of Yavin, where Luke destroyed the first Death Star. This open-faced helmet offers a completely different building experience to those released before, featuring as much detail inside as outside.

The open design requires some creative building techniques to attach the sides of the helmet securely, while the intricate squadron markings are accurately replicated with printed pieces and stickers. The result is truly unique within the series and serves as a particularly nice counterpart to the TIE Fighter Pilot Helmet (75274). If we do say so ourselves…

The Mandalorian Helmet (75328) arrived two years after the Boba Fett Helmet (75277), so you might expect the pair to be nearly identical in design, albeit with color changes. However, the designer instead took this opportunity to refine the shape of the visor on Din Djarin’s beskar helmet, using some new wedge plates developed after Boba Fett’s helmet was released. The model’s many drum-lacquered silver elements further ensure it stands out on a shelf.

While the Stormtrooper Helmet (75276) would definitely look good alongside Mando’s helmet, the Dark Trooper Helmet (75343) is perhaps even better. Moff Gideon deploys these intimidating droids against Din Djarin and his allies when they attempt to rescue Grogu. This model captures their sinister presence perfectly, with stunning red eyes and a forward tilt on its display stand, as though preparing to strike.

    Attack of the Clones

The Clone Wars was a major focus for LEGO Star Wars in 2023, so this was the perfect occasion to release the Clone Commander Cody Helmet (75350) and Captain Rex Helmet (75349), recreating these celebrated Clone officers in their Phase I and Phase II guises, respectively.

Displaying these two beside the Stormtrooper Helmet (75276) shows how the helmets worn by Republic and Imperial forces developed over time, beginning with the angular features of Commander Cody’s orange-accented helmet, which bears a resemblance to Mandalorian designs. Captain Rex’s helmet retains a similar visor but adds rounded respirators like those on the iconic visage of Imperial Stormtroopers.

Clone Troopers were not the only additions to the series, however, as the Princess Leia (Boushh) Helmet (75351) also arrived in 2023. This distinctive helmet is unlike anything else in the collection, reflecting the alien nature of its original wearer, the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh. Of course, the helmet is best known for its use by Princess Leia, forming part of her disguise to infiltrate Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi™. Sneaky!

Beyond its unique shape and impressive mechanical detail on either side, the model’s earthy colors provide a nice contrast to the stark black and white of many helmets in this series. Not all heroes wear capes – sometimes, they wear helmets.

    Did you know?

LEGO Star Wars designer César Soares created at least one model for each year of the Helmet Collection, including the Stormtrooper Helmet (75276), Darth Vader Helmet (75304), Luke Skywalker (Red Five) Helmet (75327) and Captain Rex Helmet (75349).
