We also reveal what else is required to carry out the job as LEGO Games developer, and what life is like in the LEGO Games team.

What makes your jobs fun?

Cephas: We are simply crazy about games – we have all more or less turned our hobbies into our careers, and when you love what you do every day, it’s obviously easy to always feel motivated to take on new challenges.
Nico: The work we do in LEGO Games is very diverse. We’re not working on a project that has existed for years – we can start from scratch and go from there. We’re learning as we go.

What does your workday look like?

Jesper: I start with coffee!
Cephas: Writing rules, building models, testing games, evaluating results.
Jesper: Drinking coffee.
Henk (ignoring Jesper): We also work with 3D software, calculate cost, have meetings…
Jesper: …and getting a coffee…
Bastiaan: …and eating cakes! And pull pranks on our colleagues.
Cephas (laughs): Yes – Okay, we mustn’t forget the social aspect.
Jesper: And coffee…

How do you, as an adult, develop games for kids?

Jesper: By being totally childish!
Bastiaan: We’re not really grown-ups…
Cephas (thinking about a serious answer):
You should never forget what it was like to be a kid. Talk to a lot of kids, observe their behavior, and as a designer, you must learn from that.
Jesper:  When we have kids test the games, 80% of the time they act like we expect them to, but sometimes they really surprise you, like when they suggest adding ants or a sandbox to a game – something that might be far from the original concept of the game but they think would be really cool.
