Tips for installing the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime app on a Chromebook

Recommended system requirements

For a list of Chromebook devices that support the SPIKE app, click here.

If you’re planning to install the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime app on a Chromebook, you’ll need at least the following for best performance:

  • 1.40 GHz Intel® Celeron® 2955U dual-core processor
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 3 GB available storage space
  • Bluetooth 4.0 or above
  • Android 7.0 or newer
  • Google Play Store access required

Devices with lower specifications may be able to run the SPIKE app but it might not be the optimal experience.

Android System WebView

If you’re having problems opening the SPIKE app or EV3 Classroom app on Chromebook, you might need to update the Android System WebView. This can be updated through the Google Play Store by following these steps:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Select ‘My apps & games’ from the menu bar
  3. Find ‘Android System WebView’ in the list and press ‘Update’

Admin managed devices

Schools may have a system administrator managing devices. Support can be found through Google. Click here to find out about making the software available and here to find out about managing access to data.

Google Play Store access

The SPIKE app for Chrome is available for download in the Google Play Store.

If your school restricts access to the Google Play Store on student devices, please contact your school’s system administrator. For more info on how to manage access to trusted apps, like the SPIKE app, they can refer to Google’s support page here.

Possible workaround for managed devices

For schools and districts that restrict access to the Google Play Store, the system administrator may need to take some extra steps to install the SPIKE app:

  • Allow access to the Google Play Store on student devices
  • Download the SPIKE app
  • Restrict students’ access within Google Play to prevent new downloads and purchases
  • More details can be found on Google’s support page here

Removing STEAM units

The SPIKE app is full of educational fun! Students can download STEAM units to unlock engaging lessons. Each unit needs up to 660MB on the device.

Saving space is sometimes necessary, especially if a number of students are sharing a device. Removing units after they’re no longer needed, or limiting the number of downloaded units on a device can help with space.

If you’d like to free up space by uninstalling units from the device:

  1. Open the SPIKE app
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner of the home screen
  3. Select ‘General’ and then ‘DELETE ALL UNIT PLANS’
