Explore the Vibrant New LEGO® Icons Shopping Street

Welcome to a shopping experience like no other! Inspired by historic European architecture, the new LEGO® Icons Shopping Street adds a touch of retail therapy to any LEGO Modular collection.

The detailed and intricate new set features buildings with charming, angled walls, ornate facades, a central alleyway and a classic plaza. It’s built over three levels and includes a split-level music shop with marching-band instruments, and a furniture store. It’s topped off with a delightfully furnished apartment with a bathroom, while a roof garden provides space for potted plants and a pigeon coop.

To find out more, we spoke with the LEGO Model Designer, Hoang Dang, who worked with Ashwin Visser to bring this set to life.

Say hello to a shopper’s paradise

We started by asking Hoang to tell us about the beautiful, corner-style music shop called Brickley’s.

“The shop sells musical instruments for a marching band,” he says. “There you can find a sousaphone, a trumpet, a French horn, a trombone, a clarinet, and a decorated hat for the band. In the corner of the room, there is a staircase with a new building technique to get the steps curve smoothly around the corner. There’s a story here, as the mother is taking her twin girls to shop for their marching-band instruments.”

A little more on that family later! For now, let’s continue with our tour.

“Up on the first level, the music store continues,” says Hoang. “On this level, you can find a marching drum kit, batons, sticks, and cymbals. Go through the door to the left, and gain access to the carpenter workshop. This is where you will find the carpenter’s current project and her secret project: the wooden duck.”

A hidden Easter egg to a key moment in the history of the LEGO Group that we’re sure fans will love.

Now, let’s amble into the next shop on the street.

“The furniture store having a big sale,” says Hoang. “Inside, you can find many different ways of building chairs and interesting techniques that capture different furniture designs. In front of the shop, the apprentice is helping the carpenter push a chair out of the door for delivery.”

The story continues in the included living quarters, which contains another Easter egg.

“There is a hidden call back to the retro radio,” says Hoang. “The floor has an interesting layout with the toilet in the spire and access to the roof. This is where the owner waters her flowers and feeds the birds. But the water is not working, because there is a leak in the pipe! On the back of the model, the alley sidewalk can be lifted to reveal the broken pipe. Water is pouring out everywhere and damaging the wooden floor of the furniture store. Not the best day for our carpenter!”

So why the pipe is broken, you might ask?

“On the back next to the trash can, there is a rat sitting next to part of the pipe. He has full access to the store through his rat hole on the ground floor. And all the way to the top of the spire, you can find his secret hideout with a cozy room, a little purple rug, and his stash of cheese.”

A cast of original characters

While LEGO Modular sets offer plenty of potential for storylines, they also offer us a chance to introduce new combinations of characters, and this set is no different.

We begin with our twins.

“It’s the first time twin girls appear in a modular building,” says Ashwin. “And on their marching-band uniforms is another call back to LEGO Group history.

“The logo on the hat is the Billund crest. A call-back to the town and the graphic from the Town Hall Modular.”

In terms of characters, there is also a carpenter, a shopkeeper and an apprentice, each one offering plenty of opportunity for play and display, as well as interaction with other LEGO Modular buildings.

HL: Next customer, please!

Whether you’ve collected many (or even all) of the previous LEGO Modular sets or this is your first, the LEGO® Icons Shopping Street is a set that won’t disappoint. It’s intricate, beautiful and packed with fun storylines and details that will have you exploring long after the real shops have closed.

So, step inside, we’re sure you’ll find something that you like!
