Everything you need to know about the new LEGO® The Legend of Zelda™ set

Fans of The Legend of Zelda™ series were thrilled when we released the first LEGO® set based on the characters and world of Hyrule.

Now, they’ll be delighted, as a second set arrives in the form of the LEGO® The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ – The Final Battle.

Based on the climactic moment of one of the series’ most loved games, this set will make a great gift for collectors and gamers alike.

To get an inside look at the set and find out how it all came together we spoke to Wes Talbot, Design Manager at The LEGO® Group, who just so happens to be a pretty big fan of the video game.

The adventure begins

“I'm a huge The Legend of Zelda fan!” says Wes. “I have completed every game in the franchise. Some of them 10 times!”

While Wes might have played every game, there is one that stands out to him: The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™.

“It was the game that made me fall in love with the series due its rich universe, quirky characters, and grand sense of adventure,” Wes says.

Selecting the new set

The new set is based on the final battle from The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™. It features Link, Zelda and Navi as they face Ganon, the monstrous beast, in the ruins of Ganon’s castle.

We asked Wes what fans can expect from the new set.

“You can expect a highly detailed and brick-built Ganon figure that can be displayed in the diorama or taken off and placed in a pose. There are also detailed minifigures and unique printed elements to capture authentic detail, all wrapped up in a display that captures a moment in time from an epic game that made a lot of epic memories.”

As only the second LEGO set based on the world of The Legend of Zelda, we asked Wes how they made the decision to choose this moment.

“We explored a few ideas for what the set should be,” says Wes. “We had already created Link and Zelda in the Deku Tree set, but it seemed a real shame not to also have a Ganondorf minifigure to complete the cast of main characters. This scene in particular is great because the three main characters are all present, and it's a memorable moment with interesting things to build. There's also a nice harmony in the fact that the Deku tree depicts the very beginning of Link’s quest in the game and now we have his final challenge.”

Using the games for reference

Having played the game so many times, Wes could probably recall the battle from memory. But this set required a new level of study.

“There isn’t a lot left of Ganon’s Castle on the battlefield,” says Wes. “So, I paid close attention to try and capture what was there. The ruined tower made a great backdrop for Link and Zelda to balance out the size of Ganon.”

We know that LEGO designers love to hide details deep within their sets, so we asked Wes if there were any Easter eggs that fans should look out for.

“In the game, if you were running low on health, you could lure Ganon to some chunks of rubble and he would break them with his swords, causing Recovery Hearts to appear,” says Wes. “We wanted to capture this detail, so some of the debris panels can be removed to find some hearts. It is also common that players use the Megaton hammer for this battle, so we thought it could be fun to have that option available, and it can be stored in the tower when not in use.”

A great new set to build and display

The Legend of Zelda series has fans all around the world, and we’re honoured to be bringing them the second set based on this beloved world. Maybe you’re like Wes and have played every game multiple times or perhaps you’re a newer fan, but whatever your relationship, you’ll love building and displaying the LEGO® The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ – The Final Battle set.
