About LEGO® DUPLO®

The LEGO Group started research into making a larger brick for younger builders in the 1950s, and the DUPLO® brick was launched in 1969. The name ‘DUPLO’ comes from the Latin word ‘duplus,’ meaning ‘double.’ The name was chosen because DUPLO® bricks are double the size of LEGO® bricks!

DUPLO® figures first appeared in 1977. We’ve also made lots of DUPLO® animals, accessories, and more. The first DUPLO® train came out in 1983, with the first electric train launching in 1993.

It was important for us to make sure that the new DUPLO® sets were both fun for young fans, and provided educational value as well. Many DUPLO® sets teach kids basic concepts, like counting, in a playful and accessible way. You can find lots more information about DUPLO®, as well as ideas for fun activities, here.

We’re always working to make DUPLO® sets even better and more fun. You can always check out our LEGO® Shop to see what’s new!
