Clones, clones, clones!
2013 saw the release of an amazing fourteen different Clone Troopers – the most of any year before or since – that took inspiration from various sources, providing a unique blend of styles. Sets inspired by the animated series were still going strong, although the established Phase I Clone Troopers transitioned to their Phase II armor, requiring new helmets. Captain Rex therefore underwent some changes and was joined by his 501st Legion Clone Troopers for the first time.
New sets depicting the Battle of Geonosis were also released this year and introduced six new Clone Troopers, in Phase I armor to match their live-action design, rather than the animated figures. The selection included four Clone Trooper officers, with green, blue, dark red and yellow details denoting the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and commander, respectively.
Finally began, The Yoda Chronicles™ series did… Don’t worry, we’ll stop there! Two versions of the wise little green character were released in 2013 and accompanied by the Special Forces Clone Trooper and matching commander. Uniquely, these Clone Troopers wore Stormtrooper helmets, but elaborate printing disguised their Stormtrooper shape. This year was also notable for introducing a standardized head for all live-action Clone Troopers, dubbed the ‘angry clone’ head within the LEGO Star Wars fan community.
Innovation continued into 2014, as two additional Phase II Clone Trooper Battle Packs were unleashed. Kashyyyk Troopers (75035) reintroduced Kashyyyk Scout Troopers alongside new 41st Elite Corps Clone Troopers, while Utapau Troopers (75036) presented a pair of 212th Legion Clone Troopers and Airborne Troopers. Commander Gree arrived in full camouflage to command his forces on Kashyyyk.
The dark red 91st Recon Corps Clone Trooper returned too, while the standard, non-decorated Phase II Clone Trooper was available in two sets. Two more Clone Troopers with animated styling were also produced, including printed legs, which have become a normal feature for almost every Clone Trooper minifigure from 2014 onwards.
