Testing a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 motor

Here are the steps to follow to test LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 motors. Make sure you're using a Mac or Windows PC and you've installed the MINDSTORMS® EV3 software.

  1. Click on the link below that matches your motor and save the test program on your computer:
  2. Turn on your EV3 Intelligent Brick and connect it to your computer using the USB cable.
  3. Connect your motor to one of the output ports (A, B, C or D).
  4. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will open the MINDSTORMS® EV3 software and launch the test program.
  5. Once in the EV3 software, click the green 'Play' button to test the motor.
  6. You’ll know the motor is working properly if it goes back and forth. If it’s not working, try a different port.

You can continue testing other motors and ports by repeating steps 3-5.

If it works in one port, but not another, there may be a problem with that port.

If it doesn’t work in any port, it could be a problem with the motor itself or the cable connecting it to the P-Brick. Try swapping out the cable with another to find out which.

Get in touch with us if you’ve found there’s a problem with a motor or a port. We’ll be happy to sort things out for you based on the result of your troubleshooting.
