Just Imagine with Henrik Andersen 💭

Just imagine if doing what you love could be a win for you and your colleagues. Then imagine it was great for customers and profits too. Henrik Andersen’s LEGO® journey has been the gift that keeps on giving - but it’s what this has given to others that means the most.

“When I joined as a Senior Frontend Engineer, I was given a lot of responsibility. That responsibility also came with a lot of freedom. This is how things work here. We’re free to be who we are. We’re free to explore and be creative. We’re free to think outside the box. It’s how things get done. We are trusted to deliver and can count on the support of talented colleagues to do so.

“You could say my career journey here started with an act of bravery. When I joined the Webshop team there was already a webshop up and running. The fact that it had been built within a very short time frame was reflected in the code. I managed to convince our stakeholders that we needed to rebuild the entire frontend application. If we did this, it would mean we’d be able to deliver new features across a longer time frame.

“For the next two years, my team and I built a brand-new frontend for our B2B webshop. When you work that long on a product, it’s important that you stay focused on the goal. It’s also important that you care about what you’re doing and take a collaborative approach. It was definitely the right thing to do. It meant creating a better product that enabled our customers to help themselves and this translated into healthy growth in revenue for the business.

“It was a complex challenge that required a lot of different skills. Communication, stakeholder management, programming, etc. These were skills I didn’t necessarily have when I joined but acquired as part of the development process. Now, I’m a Senior Engineering Manager, it’s my job to empower people to reach their full potential while at the same time contributing to a product as an Engineer.

“I recently joined a new team, working on how we can translate a physical showroom into a digital one. The point is to bring our products to customers and showcase novelties online. It’s an amazing project. Figuring out how to capture the real-world experience and put it into a digital context takes a lot of imagination.

“With my manager hat on, it’s important to keep my colleagues happy and make sure they understand how they can grow in their roles. It’s my job to help them with that. It’s important to know that when you join the LEGO Group, you’re not just getting a job. You’re building your career.

“Part of what I enjoy most about my role is seeing people grow and, as I’d like to believe, being a part of that growth. I have always had high standards for the work I deliver, and I expect the same from the people I work with. We should always strive to exceed expectations. Working with people in this way is extremely satisfying but also very complex”.

“Everybody comes from different backgrounds and experiences. The level of challenges people face is also very different. So as a manager, you need to be able to adapt and put yourself in their shoes. The main thing to keep in mind is to be curious enough to understand and when you do, to care enough to be as supportive as you can.
