  Great idea - Bad playability

  My son loved the set and he especially loved building it, however the actual playability is horrible. The pieces are bulky, hard to distinguish and the board itself is pretty tight, which makes for a bad playing experience. Yes, it looks cool, but it would be great to make it more spacious to actually be able to play it. My son is 7 and he already has plans to expand the board to bigger dimensions so we can actually play it comfortably. Overall, I get that the selling point is because it’s a Harry Potter item, but the price tag is too high for this set.

  Really plain

  I wanted a Lego chess set and I'm an HP fan so I preordered this set as soon as it was possible. I think it's the first Lego set I regret buying. This set was really dull to build, no cool techniques and very repetitive (the repetitiveness was expected). The set is also very plain looking when done. I feel the board is lacking some finishing touches and the play pieces are only vaguely similar to the movie chess set. As a playable set, I'll echo another reviewer: The board is pretty small and the pieces can be hard to differentiate but it's definitely usable. Anyways, take a good look at the pictures before purchasing. There's really nothing special here. If you just want a chess set, you're probably better off designing your own.

  Why would you go backwards in designing a set?

  Many people may not realize, but Lego has made a Chess/Checker set before, under the Creator Expert series, while the board sits taller than Wizard Chess, it's a much better designed set. each square has an actual nub to HOLD the game piece in place, the board sit higher because all the underneath space is storage, not just dead support beams. It can also be pulled in half and stored easily, there is no easy way to store Wizards Chess, the board doesn't fit back in the box it comes with, all the pieces are loose and have pieces fall off easily. Overally the build is incredibly simple you basically just repeat the same steps 16 times for the pawns and 8 more times for the named pieces, the board takes no time at all to assmemble beacause its literally just a few spacers and 64 black and white tiles. It could have been done much better.

  Great display and always ready to play! Hogwarts wizard chest with endless fun. Amazing value for the number of pieces. Quality is outstanding - no one believed its made of Lego. It’s a fab set and such steal for the price. its took us around 45 minutes to put it together. We were captivated for hours on end, while enjoying a game of chess and role-playing endless adventures with characters from the magical movies. Perfect in every single way!! Well done Lego!!
