Thousands of entries have been received from children all over the United States to name the Mars Exploration Rovers. If you submitted an entry, thank you for your participation!

When will the winner be announced?
The winning rover names and the names of all winners will be announced sometime before the first Mars Exploration Rover launches, which is currently scheduled for May 30, 2003.

How will I find out if I won?
Winners will be notified by mail.

How do I find out who won?
For the name of the Grand Prize winner, go to www.nametherovers.org or planetary.org between May 1st and July 31st, 2003. The winner's name will also appear in the September 2003 issues of LEGO Magazine and The Planetary Report.


Who can enter?
The Name the Rovers contest is open to all students in grades K-12 in the United States, including U.S. possessions and schools operated by the U.S. for the children of American personnel overseas.

How do I enter?
To enter the Name the Rovers contest, you'll need to provide names for both of the rovers and write an essay (see chart below for word count) to explain why those names were selected and why they should be chosen for the Mars mission.

If you're under the age of 13, you can enter the contest by downloading a registration form in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, filling out all of the required information and mailing it to the address indicated on the form:

If you're age 13 or older, you can enter the contest by using the printed entry form (as described above) or via the online contest entry form.

Please locate your school grade in the chart below for the maximum number of words to be used in your essay.

If you are in Grade # Not to Exceed:
Kindergarten - Third 50 words
Fourth - Seventh 250 words
Eighth - Twelfth 500 words

When doing research for suggested rover names, please keep in mind that space objects, missions, and spacecraft have traditionally been named after people or places from history, mythology, or fiction, or with words that convey a spirit of exploration or enterprise.
