LEGO Mosaics
Learn all about mosaics, and find out how to create one with your LEGO elements!
Have you ever wanted to design a flat picture instead of a 3D model with your LEGO elements? Learn all about mosaics in this lesson, then follow our step-by-step instructions to make your own LEGO mosaic!

What is a mosaic?

A mosaic is a picture, pattern, or decorative design made by setting small colored pieces of material onto a surface. In art and architecture, mosaics are usually made of stone or ceramic pieces in a variety of colors set into cement or mortar.

It's all in the details!

Resolution is an important factor in creating a successful mosaic. Resolution is the amount of detail that can be seen in an image. The size of the pieces that are used, as well as the overall size or area of the surface determine the resolution of the mosaic. Smaller pieces, as well as larger surfaces, allow for more detail. The more detail or the sharper the image, the higher the resolution. An image with less detail would have a lower resolution.

If you are building a LEGO mosaic with 1X1 plates or tiles on a 32X32 base plate, the resolution will be the same as the resolution of a mosaic built with 1X2 plates or tiles on a 64X32 base plate. Because you have doubled the size of your pieces and you have doubled the size of your base plate, the mosaic image is twice as large, but the amount of detail has not changed. Anytime you change either the size of the pieces or the size of the base plate, the resolution of your mosaic will change. However, if you increase or reduce the size of both elements equally, the resolution will remain the same. Make sense?

Color counts too!

A range of colors is used in a mosaic in order to express the particular details of an image. The more different colors that your mosaic uses, the more information you can express. Highlights and shadows can be used to enhance the realism of an image, and give a flat picture visual dimension. To add highlights, use colors that are tints of the base color. For example, if you have a red ball, the highlight would be pink. If you make a blue ship, the highlight might be light blue. Likewise, shadows should be a shade of the color they reflect.

You can make a LEGO Mosaic from a base plate and small tiles or plates. It can be as simple or complex as you decide -- you are the designer!

LEGO Designer Tip!
Cartoons are a great source of color inspiration. Look at some of your favorite cartoons and note how they make highlights and shadows using different colors. Try to mimic their style if you'd like.
