Everything we do is driven by our desire to put children first. We champion the power of learning through play to inspire children to become the builders of tomorrow, and provide safe physical and digital products that promote children’s wellbeing.

Inspiring children to learn through play

Most of our traditional programs are designed to encourage children to play together. In the first half of 2020, COVID-19 reshaped how we reached children with Learning Through Play initiatives. In collaboration with the LEGO Foundation, we shifted our focus to making financial donations to charity partners who support children in Learning Through Play, expecting to reach over one million children with these grants in 2020. We have also donated over 250,000 sets to children in need of play.

Most of our employee volunteering activities are held in Q3 and Q4 to coincide with seasonal events.

In first half of 289 employees participated in volunteering activities. COVID-19 prevented previously planned face-to-face activities and instead, we engaged employees from across the company in creating content for our Let’s Build Together initiative, as well as exploring ways to volunteer digitally.

Virtual Play Week

Each year, we celebrate the power of play by inviting all employees to play for a day, and inspire them to become ‘Learning Through Play’ ambassadors. However, this year, in response to the COVID-19 situation, Play Day became a Virtual Play Week in June 2020.

Every employee received a LEGO® Classic box with an invitation to join us for the Virtual Play Week – five days of live and recorded sessions on the endless creativity, challenges and potential that can be unlocked through play. An invitation to join the event was shared with Merlin Entertainments, which owns the LEGOLAND theme parks, and partner organizations that share our belief in Learning Through Play, such as UNICEF, Right to Play and institute for imagination.

More than 5,700 colleagues and partners from across the globe played along during the week. This new way of
celebrating play has encouraged us to keep on playing, both virtually and physically.

Our ambition is for our business is to go beyond zero impact and to have a positive impact on the environment. Here’s what we’re doing to reduce waste, use sustainable materials and become emissions free.

Sustainable materials

Our ambition is to make LEGO® bricks from sustainable sources by 2030 without compromising quality or safety. This a bold ambition as it requires creating entirely new materials. Currently, around 2% of LEGO elements (80 of the 3,600 available) are made from materials that meet our sustainability requirements, including the leaves of the LEGO® Ideas Treehouse.

(78,433kg ) of LEGO® bricks have been donated as part of the program, reaching over 23,000 children in need of play. More than 4,300 of these donated boxes have supported first graders with hands-on Learning Through Play during their distance learning.

Carbon efficiency

In first half or 2020, our carbon efficiency increased by 9.6% compared to the same period last year. We have several energy projects planned for this year that will enable us to meet our 2020 targets, such as adding heat recovery to air compressors used in our factories and installing solar panels at our factories in Nyíregyháza, Hungary and Jiaxing, China.

Zero waste

By 2025, our ambition is to ensure no waste from any LEGO® factory, office or store reaches landfill. We currently recycle 91% of all waste, including 100% of the plastic waste from our moulding machines. We have ambitious plans for 2020, however new projects planned in Q1 and Q2 have been postponed to Q3 and Q4, due to the impact of COVID-19 on production facilities.

With 7,327 tonnes of waste in first half of 2020, waste efficiency improvement has increased by 22% compared to the same period in 2019. The target for 2020 is a 2% reduction in waste volumes compared to 2019. We expect to produce a similar amount of waste in 2020 as in 2019. The large reduction in the first half of 2020 was due to the temporary closure of factories in China and Mexico, due to the impact of COVID-19.

We care deeply about the people who make LEGO® play experiences possible. Here’s what we’re doing to ensure our workplace and supply chain are safe and inclusive.

Celebrating diversity

We aim for a diverse and inclusive workplace that brings together people of different nationalities, ethnicities, genders and capabilities. In 2019, women accounted for 43% of positions filled at manager level and above (including 63% of the Vice President and Senior Vice President roles filled). And in the first half of 2020, that figure has increased to 46%.

A responsible supply chain

Our suppliers are audited regularly by third parties to comply with our Responsible Business Principles.

In 2020, audits have been affected by the COVID-19 situation, with health and safety concerns resulting in restrictions on travel, factory closures and the decision to postpone audits. We have completed 41% of scheduled audits, and aim to complete 100% by the end of 2020 as travel restrictions are gradually being lifted. In 40% of audits undertaken, we identified higher-risk non-conformities.

This is mainly because some suppliers have been producing essential materials for other customers, such as packaging for medical equipment and hand sanitizers, to help manage the spread of COVID-19. This has resulted in increased working hours. We are actively working with these suppliers to balance the need for critical materials with reasonable working hours. This has included extending delivery deadlines for LEGO products and providing online training to suppliers on this issue. We are training our suppliers in responsible business principles, and collaborating closely with them to return to normalized working hours as soon as possible.
