Science, technology, engineering and math; sounds like a high schooler’s schedule, right? Try a toddler’s afternoon instead. Get going with STEM learning now, using a set like the LEGO® DUPLO® Construction sets, and you’ll be giving your little one a (hard-hatted) head start.
Because building site trucks are such exciting examples of engineering excellence for a toddler, the vehicles in the Construction sets come equipped with multiple mechanical features. The digger, for example, has a bucket that scoops, a base plate that swivels, and a bendable arm that snaps into place.
Meanwhile, the dump truck has a skip that tips, as well as four sturdy wheels to counter the digger’s caterpillar tracks. Each feature teaches about big beast technological design, while flexing fine motor skills at the same time.
The set also unearths math puzzles. Whether it’s calculating how many bricks it takes to turn the digger into a crane, or counting the rubble piles left to be cleared, your little one can put brains as well as brawn into their building-site stories.
There’s a little bit of social sciences here, too. The digger and dump truck make a dynamic duo for practicing teamwork, as we found when we gave the set to one mum and her young builder.
