From tiny acorns mighty oak trees grow, or so they say. Nope, no idea who “they” is, but it’s a fair point. Just try building this humble LEGO® DUPLO® DIY tree and watch your little one’s playtime branch off into new directions.
Trees are richly rooted in play and learning opportunities for preschoolers. They showcase scale and size. They are the ultimate symbol for the changing of the seasons. They provide a lesson in how us clever ol’ humans take one thing, a tree, and turn it into another thing, paper. Conversely, trees are also a lesson in how to look after the environment.
This DIY sapling helps with all the above and more. It brings realism to a small-world play scene, by acting as landscaping. Or the tree can become the story itself, if, for instance, a cat gets stuck up it and the fire brigade has to be called.Making trees an integral part of play now will last well into later childhood. One day, there will be branches to swing from, and tree houses to scamper into (try not to freak out at your child’s lack of fear!). Until then, get building at home. If you don’t have all the bricks needed, it’s fine. Leaves can be brown, orange, red or green – and that’s a nifty way to visually work through nature’s cycles. So let your little one pick a season, or four, then share pictures of their trees and play scenes on our Facebook page.
