Make a special delivery with the LEGO® DUPLO® DIY stork

Is it possible to think of a stork without a blanket-wrapped baby hanging from its beak? And can anyone actually remember where the story came from?

The path of childhood is paved with mythical characters. There’s the jolly old dude who delivers presents. The Fairy who collects teeth. And, of course, the aforementioned bird that brings babies. These well-intentioned white lies pass down through so many generations, we often forget how they began.

Most parents don’t want to blow the secret of Santa or the tooth fairy, but the stork can be a great way to introduce your little one to the existence of myths. One theory is that the association began in Europe where storks would return in the spring, nine months after migrating, and nine months after most weddings typically took place every year. It’s all fascinating stuff and compelling storytelling for your little one, who will enjoy picking fact from fiction.

Aside from all of that, there’s more fun to be had. Storks are incredibly graceful creatures, so show your little one how to glide around the room and exercise their gross motor skills. Use the accompanying nest to exemplify how these maternal birds care for their young. Or why not recreate the stork’s clattering call to bring out your child’s natural rhythm and musicality?

If you’re missing any of the bricks needed for this build, particularly the wings, improvise with paper or card. We’d love to see pics of your little one’s DIY stork, so share them on our Facebook page.
