Learning. Innovating. Collaborating. These are three of the most important elements in personal and professional growth. Just imagine working somewhere that offered you all this and more. Then imagine this involved a role that was responsible for bringing joy to millions of customers around the world. This is Lennart’s experience of working in a production role at the LEGO Group.

“The first thing I noticed when I joined the LEGO Group was the genuine passion for doing things differently. There’s a real appetite for innovation here. This is not only about delivering improvements for our customers, but also how we can make life easier for our colleagues. But this is hardly surprising for a business that puts the wellbeing of its people at its very core.

“I’ve been here since August 2022, so not that long at all. I am the Director for Automation Operations, so I have global responsibility for Operational Technology (OT) within automation systems. This covers everything from support to installation and commissioning to maintenance on site. It’s a big role and a challenging one but I know I have the support of a highly specialised team and it’s been great getting to know them. My team is ambitious. We have a crucial job to do and understand that this is best done collaboratively and with the buy-in of our stakeholders.

“As a people leader, what I do here is important because it’s all about getting the most from a high-performing team of satisfied and motivated specialists within automation systems. This means our product lines on site run smoothly and with minimum downtime. Innovation is particularly important here too. Newness in the production lines and automating processes reduces the amount of heavy workload for employees around our sites.

“This role is already helping me develop my leadership skills. I can see that I will definitely grow in this position and gain valuable learnings from my global responsibilities. In my team, I need the brightest minds in automation, people who can innovate and see opportunities to make automation smarter and better. In my role it is important to develop a team culture where employees develop new ideas and are able to test out ideas to inspire creativity.

“It’s how we live the LEGO® spirit ‘only the best is good enough - by always considering if what we do is actually the best way to do things or if we can improve our ways of working by implementing a new process or exploring a different kind of technology.

“I’m also fortunate to be led by someone who thinks differently to me – a role model. Being challenged in this way contributes enormously to my development. For our first one-to-one meeting, I was prepared for one hour of hardcore business talk, KPIs etc. But these were not her primary concern. I was. She wanted to know how I was doing, how my family was and how the move from Copenhagen had gone. Business could wait. This is a caring culture that I haven’t experienced elsewhere, and the genuine interest shown in me as a person is motivating.

“On top of all of this, I also get to be involved with different universities across Denmark to try and attract the brilliant minds that we need in the future. This is an important job and I feel we have a responsibility to participate in developing education and students wherever we can make a meaningful contribution. We are a business that thrives on learning, so how could we not?

“Learning is important for me too. I need to be in this kind of environment; it helps me to grow. Everyday, I learn from my team. It is they who have the expert knowledge within Automation and I learn both from my peers and people leader.
