Helping rare animals: Sea Turtles

Meet Amy and her babies, Bibi, Bobo and Bubu. They’re safe and sound in the Turtles Rescue Mission center. These cute little sea turtles are lucky to have the five Friends around to help them live a long, happy life! In real life, sea turtles need help from humans, too. Sea turtles are among the world’s endangered species. Overfishing, pollution and illegal trade are some of the dangers to these animals and their home. It sounds crazy, but if you drop a plastic bag on the beach, ocean currents can carry pieces of it all across the globe! Even far away to turtle territory. Sea turtles can’t always tell the difference between a plastic bag and a yummy jellyfish. They get sick or hurt if they try to eat it. Even if you don’t live near a sea turtle habitat, you can still do lots of little things to help save their home. Here’s how: - Ask your parents to only buy seafood that’s certified as “sustainable”. This means it was either caught or farmed somewhere where the number of fish is stable and healthy. - If you are eating out, ask the restaurant if their sea food is from a sustainable source. - If you are on vacation and want to buy a souvenir, don’t buy sea shells, tortoise shells, or other sea life products. - If you are ever lucky enough to visit a sea turtle habitat, ask your local guide how you can support their community and the sea turtles. - Find more articles here on LEGO® Life about how you can help reduce ocean pollution.
