OPENING (you can skip this part if you want): I had seen reports of these buildable figures months ago and had been eagerly waiting to get one since, so I was really pumped to see them all on the shelf. As it happens, my Lego Star Wars collection didn't have any Vaders in any form at all (surprising, huh?); thus I plucked the Sith Lord off the shelf and made my way to the register. Below I deliver my thoughts: PACKAGING & INSTRUCTIONS: -The color scheme does feel very Final Duel-ish, and the way Vader curls his fist on the front side is reminiscent of the big Bespin scene (you know, when Luke has his own "nooooo"-scream session). -The instructions can be a little bit hard to follow, because there are a number of relatively similar-looking pieces in relatively similar-looking colors. Just take your time and you won't have any problems. -The box is made such that (with a little finagling) Vader will fit inside! The box itself isn't hard to deal with, either; at approximately the size of a tray of Oreos (sorry, I'm feeling a bit hungry right now), it should be pretty easy to slot into a bookshelf or closet or drawer for safekeeping-- or, for that matter, easy to hide from any kids hunting for the holiday stash. FIGURE: -Vader is very tall and imposing (and poseable). Builders will get the sense that they paid for something substantial; the traditional measure of value, the price-per-piece ratio, doesn't really apply/work in this context. -Vader's head mold is very accurate, though set against such broad shoulders it seems just a bit smaller than it should. -Tips, all pictured below: stick some of the pieces into Vader's back-- there are a number of Technic slots available-- and just cover the awkwardness with the cape; switch around two of the shoulder armor pieces to give your duelist a greater range of motion on the joint-- otherwise, armor may pop off during play; stick the neck piece through the big hole in the cape so the fabric looks more like a garment than a sail stapled to Vader's shoulder blades; use the little black slope pieces (my box had a few extra, and if yours doesn't you might have some from other sets) to cover up the tan Technic pins. CLOSING (you can skip this part, too, if that's what works for you): -If you haven't been able to tell, I've had a lot of fun with this product! In these figures, builders get the perfect blend of play ability and display ability. -I know reviews aren't supposed to talk a lot about price, but I bought this set at the Rockefeller Center Lego Store for a marked-up $32.99 (that's before factoring in New York City's hefty sales tax), which led to the 4/5 for the value. It's really more of a 4.5, though; I believe the designers had to work really hard to make this all happen and I was willing to pay for their time and dedication. Grab this set elsewhere-- S@H, for example; I mean, you're already here-- at $29.99 and you get a truly tremendous bang for your buck. -I'm hoping that Lego (Lego, can you hear me?!?) keeps going at least another full wave with these sets! FINAL COMMENTS: I hope all the effort and careful editing I put into this review (my first ever, by the way) will prove helpful, or at least a little humorous, to some curious prospective Lego Star Wars buyer out there! Even if you aren't really interested in the theme now, give this set a try and know that you'll have in your hands one of the most iconic science fiction characters ever. ~41stEliteGroup

An intriguing build and imposing figure

After building several other Star Wars buildable figures, I was totally surprised by the intense Technic build that makes up Darth Vader's torso. It's quite different from other constraction sets making use of the CCBS system that Hero Factory introduced. It was a delight to see how all those little pieces fit together to make a massive, imposing figure. Probably not the toy of choice for the little ones - those pins and axles can be difficult to build. But for older, advanced builders, this is a simply amazing set! There are a few things I am less than thrilled with. First, his cape is just kind of tacked onto the back, so it folds back on itself in some poses, which doesn't do the Dark Lord of the Sith justice. During play, the shoulder pieces can pop off, but his range of motion is good enough that if you are conscious about it you can avoid it. Finally, the color of those shoulder pieces. After double checking, I learned that it actually is more movie accurate to use the dark silver pieces, but I somehow think that black would have worked better with the rest of the build. In poor lighting that dark silver actually looks perfect, as if the shoulders are reflecting some of the ambient light, but in bright light the shoulders look too garish. We don't usually see that in the movies because they're covered by the cape...which isn't the case in this toy. Oh, one more thing: for some odd reason the instructions say to put the forearm cladding on in a way that limits the range of motion of the elbow, and is different from any of the other buildable figures, so I just put the cladding on the other side of the bone to allow Darth Vader to assume more cool poses. But overall, it's a superb action figure, and huge at that. The LEGO Group really outdid themselves this time! The printing on some of the elements goes a long way towards conveying the Darth Vader look, and the new shin cladding is absolutely perfect. And of course, we can't forget about that beautiful head sculpt! If you haven't already, pick this one up!

Looks sick on the shelf and the joints makes it very posable. It was a challenging and nice build with good ideas.

A great figure let down by some minor flaws

Darth Vader went together fairly easily. The Technic torso seemed a bit over-complicated for what it does, and had a few pieces that seemed unnecessary, but otherwise looks great for the most part. The back is way too unfinished in appearance and only the cape makes it forgivable. The cape is tacked on as an afterthought. In the movies, it is attached with a chain around the neck, however here it is just held on with a Technical piece that looks bad enough sitting out there by itself, and that's not considering that the top edge of the cape is just floating at the back of the neck. It also has a hole as if at some point in the design process it was fitted around the neck and attached at the front beneath the upper chest piece, but now looks like a mistake. It would work much better if the top of the cape were extended upwards and the two small attachment holes placed there, with two larger holes vertically below those. The cape would be fitted upside down and locked in place as it is now, then folded back over so the neck passes through both larger holes, and only then flowing down the back. If the big holes were sufficiently large or even a single ovoid cutout, then an actual chain like the one in the photo attached (from one of my daughter's Friends sets) could be passed through and around the front of the neck and make it look vastly better - especially with a much better proportioned head. The head, while very well sculpted and having a silver nose and chin points as a nice touch, is disproportionately small. Did the designers forget that there is supposed to be a human head inside this helmet? It needs to be 40-50% larger to match the rest of the figure. Other minor quibbles include the grey ankles and thigh bones - these ought to be black, and on the feet, a Technic blue pin with a half top and a 1x1 slope piece or similar would make the foot look much better. Such a pity there weren't enough spares to do both feet. The articulation of the figure is a bit stiff and restricted, but that isn't necessarily a disadvantage - in the movies, Darth Vader was crippled by the time he started wearing the suit, and most good rigid body armor restricts mobility to some degree anyway. The use of a red + cross-sectioned peg to provide a left-handed grip is a big No from me. It restricts the grip too much. Far better to use a narrow (1.5mm?) round dowel so that the lower hand can "grip" the bottom of the lightsaber at any angle without having to bend the wrist. Again, a pity I don't have one. As for posability and play, the figure is very heavy in the torso and restricted in its range of movement, but as I said earlier, none of this is necessarily a disadvantage - Darth Vader was supposed to be crippled and these limitations only serve to emphasise this, enforcing the more balanced and less energetic poses and good posture that would be expected from an old martial artist with multiple disabilities.
