The LEGO Group joins voices with 100 European leaders in climate call to action
Together with businesses, government officials, NGOs, and civil society actors across Europe, the LEGO Group has signed a climate call to action reaffirming the company’s commitment to the joint fight against climate change.
The call to action is led by the Green Recovery Alliance and was released ahead of the Leaders’ Summit on Climate on 22 April 2021. It's made to bolster global climate cooperation which according to the LEGO Group CEO, Niels B Christiansen, will be key to creating impact in the battle against climate change:
“As a company dedicated to inspiring and developing the builders of tomorrow, we want to leave a better world for children to inherit. We naturally remain firmly committed to put action and investments behind this mission and have set science-based targets to reduce our C02 emissions to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. It is key that others join the fight against climate change, and our hope is that we will help inspire collaboration for the benefit of future generations. We can’t battle climate change alone.”
In January 2021 the LEGO Group signed the European Commission’s new Green Consumption Pledge to reinforce its commitment to lower its carbon footprint and help consumers make more sustainable choices. This was followed by substantial commitments and actions from the LEGO Group in 2020, including the announcement to invest up to US$400 million over three years to accelerate sustainability efforts.
About The Green Recovery Alliance
The Green Recovery Alliance is a global alliance of cross-party political decision-makers, business and financial leaders, trade unions, NGOs, think tanks and stakeholders all working to support and implement Green Recovery Investment Packages to accelerate the transition towards climate neutrality and sustainable ecosystems. The Alliance is committed to work together, share knowledge and expertise, and create synergies to deliver the needed investment decisions.
About the Call to Action
The recent call to action initiative stems from MEP Pascal Canfin who chairs the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment and Public Health. Formed in April 2020, the Green Recovery Alliance aims to increase cooperation and green investments across the continent. The alliance is calling for cross-Atlantic cooperation and for decision-makers to marry economic recovery with ambitious climate targets and action.
“The climate crisis has no political colour, no borders, and no vaccine will prevent us from its impact. We, European political decision makers, CEOs, business organisations, trade unions and think tanks, call the United States to fulfil its ambitions by adopting a climate goal of reducing by at least 50% GHG emissions by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels).”, the call to action reads.
