Our science-based CO2 target
What does a science-based target mean?
A science-based target means that our goal for reducing CO2 emissions is in line with the Paris Agreement. We aim to reduce our emissions to levels required to keep global warming below 1.5°C.
Our target has been approved by the Science Based Target initiative, a collaboration between the United Nations Global Compact, CDP, WRI and WWF. They assess and ensure that our CO2 target is ambitious enough and clearly defines our path of emission reductions.
What’s covered by our target?
Our CO2 target covers everything that goes into making and selling our products.
A percentage of these CO2 emissions come from our own factories, stores and offices. However, most emissions come from outside of our operations, from our supply chain – including emissions from the raw materials we buy, the transportation we use and what happens to LEGO products when they are no longer needed for play.
How will we meet our target?
To reach our science-based target, we are making decisions to reduce the environmental impact from all parts of our business.
This means continuing our investments in more sustainable materials for LEGO products and packaging, and exploring how to make our business more circular.
We are improving energy efficiency, expanding on-site renewable energy production and securing a supply of renewable energy across factories, offices and stores.
But we know that we can’t meet our targets alone. We are collaborating with our partners through a programme called Engage-to-Reduce and making sustainability a focus of our procurement process.
Our CO2 footprint
Every year, we calculate the carbon footprint of the LEGO Group. Understanding our climate impact allows us to take action to improve it.
We report on scope 1, 2 and 3 CO2 emissions, which ensures we account for all the emissions linked to the production and sales of LEGO products.
Our methodology follows the most recent standards and the carbon footprint is verified annually by an external party.
