    Excellent

This is an excellent LEGO product. It is small and doesn't weigh much. It operates on four different channels, allowing you to control four models at once from the same controller. The two dials allow you to control two different functions on each channel, such as two motors, or a motor and lights. Each dial has seven settings, allowing you to control the strength of the function at seven intervals. As long as nothing is obscuring the blue thing on top of the controller or receiver, the signal is perfect. At thirteen dollars, it is an excellent value for the money.

I bought this as a four part package (8879, 8884, 88000 and 88002) to motorise set 10254 The Winter Holiday Train which, in my opinion, is an excellent set and will join my Winter/Christmas diorama next Christmas. Initially I bought two parts just to make the train go but it went around the small track so quickly it always fell off! There are diagrams within the conversion instructions in the 10254 booklet but no details about how to use any of the apparatus so a ten minute job took me three times that to get it all going. However once set up the controls work beautifully. It's not a cheap option as nine batteries are needed in total and the four parts add up to over £40. I have used the parts left over to make a truck for the station and added a few extra minifigs to make the set look a little more realistic. (The "Challenging" review relates to my difficulty in understanding how the item worked in the first place!)

    Finally !!
I would recommend this to a friend!
After a Loooong wait, the 8879 remote arrived. I ordered the Night Emerald and power functions set on April 2. 2009. I recieved the train and extra flex-tracks on June 9. 2009. Finally the remote arrived on August 14. 2009. Now the train can be controlled properly !! 4 chanel IR remote with 2 functions per chanel. Chanel is selected on the orange slide in the middle, letting you pick chanel 1, 2, 3 or 4. The chanel number you chose should be the same as the chanel slide on the 8884 IR reciever brick. Each function has a jogwheel for power control, forward or reverse depending on which way you turn the dial. The Night Emerald use 1 function for lights, and 1 for motor control. There is also an emergency stop (red botton) and a reverse/invert switch (small black slide switch) Now it's possible to run the train on any of the 4 chanels, and unlike the 8885 remote, the train maintains speed and lights when you let go the controls. Finally it was worth waiting for, and it might be useful with other power functions because this remote lets your model maintain speeds when not handeled. {;o) Now we just wait for more awesome trains to follow the Night Emerald. !!! . {;o)

IR Speed Remote for Lego trains.
I would recommend this to a friend!
I bought the IR speed remote as part of the Power Functions train kit. It was a little smaller than I anticipated but I was able to quickly adjust to its size. It feels fairly comfortable in my hands (I have somewhat small hands for a guy!), quite lightweight even with batteries installed. Range, I felt, was reasonable with my current layout being approx 10 feet by 24 feet in size. The room the track is located in has off-white walls so even at times when the train is not in direct line-of-sight I've still been able to control the train as I suspect the signals bounce off the walls of the room. My only minor issue with this unit, compared to the older 9v train speed regulator is that you had a specific location of the dial to know if your train won't go too fast risking derailing which is not available on this unit as the control wheel lacks a stop position, but I was able to get a feel for how fast the train could go. On the plus side I do like having remote control function so I didn't have to be teathered to a fixed location, plus the quick stop button is very usefull too. So, for a battery operated setup, I like it.
