When Brendon Hartley, Porsche Works driver and Winner of the FIA World Endurance Driver's Championship 2015, saw the finished version of the LEGO Technic Porsche 911, he was instantly sold. “My brother and I were big LEGO enthusiasts as kids, so when I saw this I immediately thought of all the fun I would have pulling it apart and putting it back together.” After the initial delight at the way it looked and the fact that it was possible to convey the lines of the GT3 RS with LEGO Technic elements, he was then impressed to see a fully working gearbox and engine. His only question after that was: “when can I have one?”.
Recreating an iconic car using LEGO Technic elements is a journey with its share of challenges. “I really wanted to incorporate as many of the unique design details from the real car as possible, especially the shape of the bonnet and roof, the air-intakes and not least the low, sloping angle of the car. It was also important to integrate as many of the advanced technical functionalities from the real GT3 RS as we could. The steering and suspension were difficult enough, but the biggest challenge was to create the functioning paddle-shift PDK gearing system” , said Uwe Wabra, the LEGO Technic Senior Designer behind this model.
