Step 1: Print the templates onto a sheet of white paper. Place a cutting mat down to protect your workspace, and then use a ruler and craft knife to cut around the hat template onto the orange card.
Step 2: Use scissors and the second template to cut stripes from the white card.
Step 3: Use a glue stick to secure the stripes to the hat. Allow to dry.
Step 4: Use scissors to trim a 1/2in (1cm) arc from the tip of the hat, roll the hat shape into a cone, and then tuck the tab into the slot.
Step 5: Use a ruler to measure out a 5½in (14cm) square onto orange card. Use scissors to cut out the square, and then round off the corners.
Step 6: Use a ruler and pencil to mark the center point of the square, and then lightly draw a circle with a 2in (5cm) radius. Draw a smaller, inner circle with a 1½in (3.5cm) radius, and then use scissors to cut it out. Finally, make small cuts from the rim of the inner circle to the outer circle every 1/2in (1cm) or so. Bend the tabs up.
Step 7: Hold the hat pointy-side down, and then use a hot glue gun to stick the tabs to the inside of the cone.
Step 8: Your hat should now look like this.
Step 9: Use a ruler and scissors to measure and cut a 10in (25cm) piece of elastic string. Knot it on both ends, and then use a stapler to secure it to the inner brim of the hat.
Top tip: Can’t find a stapler? Use a pencil to poke two holes into either side of the hat, and then thread and knot the string into place.
