THE LEGO GROUP BUILDS HOLIDAY SPIRIT ONE BRICK AT A TIME

#BuildtoGive turns family fun into gifts of play for a million children around the world

Billund, November 5th, 2020: The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but for many children, it doesn’t always come with the same excitement. That’s why for the fourth year running, the LEGO Group is encouraging families to get creative and give the gift of play to a child-in-need, simply by making a Holiday ornament out of LEGO® bricks as part of its Rebuild the World campaign’s #BuildtoGive activity.

For every holiday creation shared on social media using the hashtag #BuildtoGive, the LEGO Group will donate a LEGO set to a child-in-need giving up to one million children in hospitals, children’s homes or vulnerable communities globally the chance to play this holiday season.

It’s easy to get involved and spread some festive goodwill. Families simply need to build a fun, festive ornament or decoration out of LEGO bricks, take a photo of it and share it on social media or LEGO Life using the hashtag #BuildToGive before the end of December. And with the LEGO Play Well study finding that over 9 in 10 parents say play helps them relax as a family(1), taking part in #BuildtoGive could offer families a great way to get into the festive spirit this year.

From beautiful baubles to rocking rocket sleigh decorations, any design is welcome, but inspiration can be found by downloading one of the easy-to-follow building instruction packs from LEGO.com/BuildToGive.

Kathrine Kirk Muff, Vice President of Social Responsibility at the LEGO Group, says: “The holidays are a time for giving and receiving, but it can be a very tough time for children in difficult circumstances. That’s why we’re proud to have donated over 1.5 million LEGO sets to children-in-need through #BuildtoGive over the last three years. But we couldn’t do it without joining forces with others; we’re always inspired by how creative children get when building to support a good cause, and are excited to continue working with generous families and our amazing partner organisations to bring the gift of play to even more children this year.”

The #BuildtoGive campaign is just one example of how the LEGO Group gives children-in-need access to play through a range of activities with partners and the LEGO Foundation. The programmes provide children with opportunities to develop life-long skills such as problem solving, collaboration and communication through play. By 2022, the LEGO Group aims to reach 8 million children around the world annually with learning through play.

Notes to Editors

In connection with the #BuildtoGive 2020 Holiday Activation, the LEGO Group will donate one LEGO® set to charity for every ornament that is built with LEGO bricks either at home and shared on social media with #BuildtoGive, at a #BuildtoGive event or in a participating store. Children under the age of 13 must obtain parent’s permission to post to social media. Total annual donation not to exceed 1,000,000 LEGO sets with a total value of 10,000,000 USD.

About the LEGO Play Well Study

All findings from the study were gathered from a total of 18,117 parents, and 12,591 children aged 5 -12 through a 20 minute online quantitative survey conducted across 18 markets (Australia and New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, China Mainland, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Romania, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Ukraine and United States of America) between May and June 2020.
