Learning about sustainability through play
For generations we have helped children learn about the world around them through play. Today we’re inspiring them to learn about the environment and sustainability by creating with LEGO® bricks. We recently launched two sets which celebrate sustainable living, LEGO Friends Olivia’s Electric Car and LEGO City My Family House. Here we meet the designers who are working to inspire children about sustainability.
Olivia's Electric Car
Olivia’s Electric Car features the two friends Mia and Olivia, a charging station, wind turbine and solar panel. And Elliot the puppy!
Ann Healy, the LEGO designer, who modelled Olivia’s Electric Car says:
“We wanted to make sustainability a fun and interactive part of playing with the model. We wanted to create a way for kids to pretend that they are making renewable energy. The blades of the turbine really spin as if the wind is blowing them to create energy. The solar panel’s position can be angled, like you are trying to catch the most sunlight. The car comes with a cable that connects to the wind turbine, like you are charging the car.”
Fenella Blaize Charity, Design director and Creative lead of LEGO Friends adds:
“LEGO Friends is grounded in the real world so as designers we take our cues from what kids experience in their everyday lives. We have a responsibility to let kids experiment and learn about topics that they are interested in and celebrate and inspire kids on the way the world could be. The environment is important to today’s kids, so we are always looking at how we can make the topic fun, educational and interactive.”
Green urban planning in LEGO City
LEGO City My City Family House features a solar panel, an electric car and charging station. Callan Jay Kemp is a Senior designer with LEGO City and helped create the My City Family House set:
“The green technologies we have designed to be part of the My City Family House are becoming increasingly commonplace in everyday life, and children these days already have such a good grasp on the new technologies and environmental needs for the future. With this set we wanted to provide view of a more sustainable future as a playful learning experience. Looking ahead we want to explore this avenue further in the design of our City sets.”
