| NASA “NAME THE ROVERS” CONTEST
A Collaboration between NASA and the LEGO Company OFFICIAL RULES NO PURCHASE NECESSARY 1. WHO CAN ENTER: If you are a U.S. resident, between the ages of 5 and 18 years and are a registered student in a U.S. school, grades Kindergarten through 12th Grade (including U.S. Possessions and schools operated by the U.S. for the children of American personnel overseas), during the promotion period, you are eligible to enter. 2. HOW TO ENTER: Complete the Official Entry Form available in the November 2002 print issue of LEGO Magazine, or on paper no larger than 8-1/2" x 11", type or print your complete name, address (No P.O. Boxes), zip code, telephone number, date of birth, name of school, school grade and two names you think would be appropriate for the two Mars Exploration Mission Robotic Rovers scheduled to launch in 2003 for a landing on Mars in 2004.
When you have completed your Official Entry Form, type or print an essay explaining why you think the two names you are submitting are the best names for the two Mars Exploration Mission Robotic Rovers. The Grand Prize Winner's submitted names may be used to name the Mars Rovers! Please locate your school grade in the chart below for the maximum number of words to be used in your essay.
Mailed entries must be received no later than 2/7/03. Send your completed entry to: NASA "Name the Rovers" Contest Entries, P.O. Box 4419, Blair, NE 68009-4419. Limit one entry per envelope. All entries become property of NASA and none will be returned. Entries will be disqualified if they contain names of past, current or proposed space missions, if they use names already adopted by any previous, present or planned astronomical observatory, (domestic or international), or if names include terms reserved for ongoing NASA flight programs, (e.g., Explorer, Discovery, Navigator.) If an entrant names the Rover after a person, that person must be deceased with no post mortem/privacy right of publicity. 3. JUDGING: Entries will be preliminarily judged to determine 100 finalist entries from each of the three Grade level groups. Final judging to determine winners will be accomplished by a panel of expert judges supervised by D. L. Blair, Inc. All judging will be based on the following criteria: originality of name - 25%; originality and creative quality of essay - 25%; writing ability - 10%; appropriateness and significance of name - 40%. In the event of a tie, tied entries will be rejudged in accordance with criteria listed above to determine final winner. Winners will be notified by mail. Decisions of judges are final. 4. PRIZES AND APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUES: (1) Grand Prize: Grand Prize also includes a 4-day/3-night trip for winner and three family members to attend the launching of a Mars Rover in 2003 at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Trip includes round trip coach air transportation from gateway airport nearest winner's home, hotel accommodations (2 rooms, double occupancy) $200 of LEGO retail product, a free one-year membership to The Planetary Society and a Planetary Society poster, Six RoboLab products for the winner's school provided by the LEGO Educational Division, (ARV: $5,000) Grand Prize Winner's submitted names may be used to name the Mars Rovers. Actual value may vary depending on city of departure; (3) First Prizes - 1 per Grade level category - An assortment of LEGO Company products, (ARV $200 per prize.); (30) Second Prizes - 10 per Grade level category - A special LEGO product (ARV $50 ea.). Prizes consist of only those items specifically listed as part of the prize. Limit one prize per person. 5. GENERAL RULES: Contest open to U.S. residents 5 years through 18 years of age who are registered students in Grades Kindergarten through 12th Grade (including U.S. Possessions and schools operated by the U.S. for the children of American personnel overseas) during the promotion period. Employees of LEGO, NASA, The Planetary Society, JPL, the California Institute of Technology, their affiliates, organizations, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and their immediate families and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible. Void where prohibited by law. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Winners may make no substitution or transfer of prize. All federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of winner. Not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete or illegible entries. Potential Grand Prize winner and parent or legal guardian of potential winner, who must accompany minor on trip, must sign an Affidavit of Eligibility certifying that submission is entrant's original work, that entrant owns right to the work, that the submission has not previously won a prize in a national contest nor has been previously published in a national publication, and that entrant has followed the Official Rules of the contest. Affidavit, along with a Release of Liability/Prize Acceptance Form, must be returned within 7 days of attempted notification. Noncompliance within this time period will result in disqualification and an alternate will be selected. Return of prize notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and an alternate will be selected. All travelers must execute a Release of Liability prior to ticketing and must possess required travel documents (i.e. photo ID, etc.) prior to travel. Trip must be taken on dates specified by The LEGO Company and may be subject to change. The LEGO Company, NASA and The Planetary Society are not responsible if the Rovers' launch date(s) are cancelled or delayed for any reason or if NASA does not use the winner's submitted names for the Rovers. The LEGO Company reserves the right to substitute prize of equal or greater value. By acceptance of prize, winners consent to use of name and/or likeness and entry material submitted in any manner by The LEGO Company for advertising or trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law. Prizewinner assumes all liability for any injuries or damages caused, or claimed to be caused, by participation in this promotion or use or redemption of any prize. Not responsible for technical hardware/ software failures, lost/unavailable network connections, misdirected e-mail, failed/incomplete/ garbled/delayed computer .The LEGO Company reserves the right to cancel/modify on-line portion of the sweepstakes or disqualify entrant if fraud/misconduct/technical failures destroy integrity of the sweepstakes as determined by The LEGO Company's site design agency. Any attempt by an entrant to deliberately damage website or undermine legitimate operation of the contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws. Should such an attempt be made, The LEGO Company reserves the right to seek damages from such entrant to fullest extent permitted by law. In the event a potential winner entered via internet and a dispute arises regarding specific individual entitled to receive prize, entries made by internet will be declared made by authorized account holder and any damage to website will be responsibility of authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at time of entry. "Authorized account holder" is defined as the person assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider/online service provider/other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with submitted e-mail address. The LEGO Company is not responsible for any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from participation in/accessing/downloading information in connection with this sweepstakes. By participating in this promotion, entrants agree to be bound by the Official Rules and the decisions of the judges. 6.
