To help celebrate the 2014 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) World Festival in St Louis, Mo., USA this past April, we challenged the LEGO MINDSTORMS Community to tackle NATURE’S FURY! Can robots be designed to explore or help fight against awe-inspiring storms, earthquakes, tornados, raging waves, and other natural disasters? Congratulate these MINDSTORMS Community members on their winning robot designs that both help people during and also prevent natural disaters.
Check out all the entries to this challenge by searching the tag "naturesfury" on the LEGO MINDSTORMS Community page.
Here are the winners:
RESEARCH: This award is for the robot project that shows the best understanding of the problem being faced by natural disasters and clearly shows how the robot solution helps with the problem.
lava rescue truck
mindstorm815 researched how volcanos form and erupt and created a lava rescue vehicle to help rescue victims of a volcanic eruption. This LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 prototype shows a design of a truck with heat resistant wheels and shields to protect the vehicle and passengers from hot lava! mindstorm815 gives a shout out to LMC member DamonMM2000 for inspiring the lava rescue truck’s steering mechanism. Hope our friends on the Big Island of Hawaii are paying attention to this cool new idea for lava rescue!
INNOVATIVE SOLUTION: This award is for the robot project that most creatively solves a problem related to Natures Fury!
Created by: PsychoPuffin
“PEP,” created by PsychoPuffin is an acronym for “Potential Earthquake Preventer.” This Nature’s Fury Challenge entry is designed to help PREVENT a natural disaster. The P.E.P. detects seismic activity and tunnels into the ground (notice the circular digging mechanism) to remove snags between the tectonic plates. Wonder if our friends in earthquake prone zones should try out this idea? This is PsychoPuffin’s first project in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Community!
PRESENTATION: This award is for the project that is presented in the most in-depth, clear, and creative way.
Created by: lukeshev
lukeshev developed a simple, elegant robot to help detect seismic activity and warn people if there is a chance of an earthquake. This LMS Community page is well organized and describes the robot’s actions with a clear, concise style. The EARTHQUAK3 DETECT3R uses an IR beacon as a tremor detector. The IR beacon sends a signal to the IR sensor to sound an error alarm. lukeshev submitted a few projects to this challenge so make sure to see them all!
